• Nokia Siemens To Buy Motorola Wireless Network Unit

Seems Motorola sold their wireless division to Nokia for 1.2 Billion.

    From the Wall Street Journal:

Telecom equipment vendor Nokia Siemens Networks said Monday it has agreed to pay $1.2 billion for the majority of U.S.-based Motorola Inc.'s (MOT) network equipment business in order to gain a stronger foothold in the important North American and Japanese markets.

      +1

I'd love to see Nokia use this to make some CDMA phones again.

The sale was for the network equipment. Motorola is spinning off its handset division separately.

I really, really need to start reading more before I hit the reply button.

I'm more interested in the spin-off of the Motorola mobile division (which is slated to launch Q1 2011 according to the article).

On a different note, I'm sure everyone else is thinking it. Man it would be nice to see Nokia get more aggressive in the CDMA phone game.

Me definitely. Nokia phones used to be my favorite for the longest time. If they had something like the E71 on Verizon I'd be all over it.

I don't think Nokia will be getting back into the CDMA market anytime soon, if ever... If I remember correctly, their last CDMA phone to be released in North America was the 6275i. However, Nokia did have some very killer CDMA chipsets.

CDMA is, unfortunately, a dying technology. Qualcomm, the major developer, pulled out of UMB, which was slated to be the 4G technology, and is now supporting UMTS only (for development)... 80% of the world already uses GSM/UMTS, and CDMA's use is limited to just about the North American continent. (Yes, i know that other countries still operate CDMA networks. However, North America is probably the one with the largest percentage of cellular users on CDMA.)

It should be noted that CDMA as a network interface isn't dead or dying at all. UMTS is based on it. Its just easier to say CDMA instead of CDMA2000, or CDMAOne, or any of the other names.

I had the same problem with Tmobile prepaid. The phone number got on a spam caller list. After a certain number of calls to voice mail, minutes got deducted. I changed the number, no more problem.

We will not discuss how to commit fraud by using an IMEI changing trick on this forum. I am not arguing it cannot be done, just that it will not be discussed further here.

    Thread closed.
