Just a quick note to let everyone know that there will be no front page posts or news round-ups until I get back from my spring vacation in Copenhagen.

In their last report on the global state of LTE, OpenSignal ranked Denmark 10th in download speeds, just ahead of Canada. Unlike Canada, however, prepaid SIM cards with generous data buckets seem to be pretty easy to obtain.

I tried (not very hard) to get my girlfriend and I reservations at Noma, purportedly the best (most expensive) restaurant in the world. We're currently on a waiting list but honestly, I'll be content with a fresh Danish pastry every morning.

We're set to return on Wednesday, April 25th, so I should be back on regular duty the next morning. See you then!

If you needed another reason to be angry at your Android device maker, here it is. According to a new feature in WIRED some OEMs have been flat-out lying about their security patches. The table above is a summary of missing patches found in Android builds across thirteen manufactures. Google and Samsung, as one would hope, are fairly honest; on the other end is TCL and ZTE, each with more than four patches missing from their "updated" devices.

For the past two years the German security firm SRL have been reverse-engineering software on hundreds on Android phones, investigating what they call "patch gap". The research will be presented today at a conference in Amsterdam.

With so many Android hardware makers there's no single reason for missing security patches. Sometimes it's an honest mistake and, to quote someone from SRL, sometimes not so much:

"Sometimes these guys just change the date without installing any patches. Probably for marketing reasons, they just set the patch level to almost an arbitrary date, whatever looks best."
Whenever a security firm presents bad news like this there's often a solution being peddled to address it. And sure enough, SRL has SnoopStitch, which runs a local test on your device and supposedly informs you of any missing patches. I tried it on my OnePlus phone but the results were inconclusive, possibly because I'm on a beta channel of the software for that device.

Read more about SRL and patch gap at the links directly below.

Some news items of note related to Canada's last-standing upstart carrier (because Vidéotron is only available in Québec):

    iPhone 8 Promotion

Freedom is once again offering the iPhone 8 for $0 down with their 10GB monthly plan. To be clear, this is a hardware deal only; you can get the 10GB data-only plan (plus unlimited global SMS) with any phone, including your own. What you also get with this deal is a $929 CAD 64GB iPhone 8 for only $360—that is, $15/month for 24 months. Not bad.

Freedom Coming Soon to The Mobile Shop

A pilot project will see Freedom plans and devices available at 13 Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore and T&T locations, through existing kiosks branded as The Mobile Shop. I had always assumed that these kiosks were owned and operated directly by the Big Three; in this case I'm happy to have been proven wrong.

    Shaw Earnings Call

Shaw Communications, FM's parent company, will be holding their quarterly earnings call today at 9am Eastern. If there's anything newsworthy to report I'll do just that via the Howard Forums news round-up later this afternoon.

    And Finally...

Not to be a Debbie Downer or anything but I feel obliged to disclose that I'm no longer a Freedom Mobile customer. Along with the expected issues pertaining to signal penetration into the back rooms of restaurants and basements, my girlfriend and I have been noticing increasingly bad latency even where the signal is strong.

Here's the part where you say: "I told you so..."

    Wearable Wednesdays: The Bip Reconsidered

Springtime in Canada... Time to show some skin!

I'm sad to report that my brief affair with the Skagen Falster is over and done. It was indeed a fetching timepiece but all too quickly I was reminded of how terrible Android Wear is. And going back to Pebble is like wearing a ticking time bomb, set to go off on June 30th when Fitbit finally shuts down the servers forever.

So instead I've been getting reacquainted with the Amazfit Bip. And honestly, the more I wear it the more I appreciate what Huami has accomplished with this little wrist-based gadget.

I harp so much on the shortcomings of Android Wear/Wear OS because the hardware is so expensive; when you spend $500 or more on a smartwatch you can't help but notice its shortcomings. But with a price tag of less than $100 it's an entirely different story with the Bip; instead of being disappointed at what it can't do I find myself surprised and delighted at what it can.

Here then, is a quick list of what the Bip does:

Shows the time, all the time. When I'm out in the world and observe the dead screens of Apple Watches on people's wrists I can't help but shake my head a little bit. Like the Apple Watch, the Bip also has a touch screen. Unlike the Apple Watch the Bip is always readable, even in bright sunlight.

Holds a charge. Amazfit's bold claim of a battery that lasts up to a month isn't too far off; I've had my Bip for two and with intermittent use the factory charge lasted until a few days ago. Tracking an hour-long walk with GPS on drains less than 4% of the battery, so it looks like it's going to be at least another 25 days before my next charge.

Displays notifications. This is, after all, the raison d'être for smartwatches. You can't reply to an incoming message like you can on Pebble, Watch or Wear OS. But considering the always-on display and battery life I'm pretty okay with this.

Tracks your health and fitness. The Bip itself has a heart rate sensor and, as mentioned earlier, GPS. For fitness tracking the heavy lifting is actually done by Mi Fit for Android or iOS, which syncs data from your watch every time you open the app.

Gives you some useful utilities. The Bip has no official app store, but the utilities on board—including alarms, a compass, stopwatch, timer and local weather forecast—are quite handy.

Holds promise for hackers. There's already a growing community of watch face designers, and some clever folks are dabbling with Tasker integration via unofficial Android apps. I honestly don't know too much about this, but the very fact that there's homebrew interest in the Bip bodes well for its future.

Lets you BYOB (bring your own band). Forget Apple and Fitbit's proprietary crap; with the Bip you get a standard 20mm quick-release silicon strap, which can be swapped out for any other 20mm band. Just like a real watch!

So there, in a nutshell, is a more in-depth look at the Amazfit Bip. It's far from perfect, of course—24-hour military time is currently the only available option. But for its display, battery life and sub-$100 price tag it's definitely worth a look.

... Either that, or the Koodo rep I spoke to made a big mistake.

I guess everyone reading this is sitting pretty on their 10GBs from last December's holiday miracle; nobody on Howard Forums seems to be talking about a spring promotion being offered by Canada's Big Three flanker brands. I first heard about it at my local Best Buy, and confirmed it with a visit to both Koodo and Virgin Mobile kiosks yesterday. It might only apply to Ontario.

The current rate cards for BYOD plans are still identical for Fido, Koodo and Virgin Mobile, but... if you take a plan with 1GB or more of data they will add an additional 3GB to your plan. In other words:

    1GB becomes 4GB for $50/month
    3GB becomes 6GB for $60/month
    5GB becomes 8GB for $70/month
    8GB becomes 11GB for $85/month

The 10GB plans probably get an extra 3GB as well, but nobody should have to pay over a hundred bucks for their cell phone plan. Come on...

For me Fido wasn't really in the running, only because the Bell/Telus network has proven to be significantly faster in downtown Toronto. So my first stop at the mall was at a Virgin Mobile kiosk. Everything was as expected, including the egregious data overage rate of $7 per 100MB that has apparently become the new standard. But there's one peculiar aspect to Virgin's Roam Sweet Roam service—for the daily roaming fee you don't actually get access to your data bucket, but instead an allowance of a mere 100MB. Despite being a big fan of local SIM cards while travelling this didn't sit well with me, so on I went to Koodo.

I'll cut to the chase: the big difference with Koodo's promotion is that the 3GB data bonus is only good for 24 months, whereas with Virgin it will remain on your account until you change your plan. So even with the meager data bucket while roaming, Virgin Mobile is definitely the better choice. I hope this helps anyone in the market for a new plan. I haven't seen these bonus data promos advertised anywhere, even on the carriers' websites, but for Ontarians they are definitely available, so grab one while you can.

I've always had a soft spot for slider phones, and seeing this Doogee Mix 4 made me instantly want one. Where the BlackBerry Priv hides a physical qwerty keyboard that slides out from the bottom of its big screen, the Mix 4 hides the selfie cam, earpiece and the usual sensors in a slab the slides out from the top.

Why? Because more screen, that's why!

Here's the Mix 4 next to a Samsung Galaxy S9+. The Mix 4 has a downright astonishing screen to body ratio of 97%, versus a relatively paltry 84.2% for the Samsung. As a reference, the screen to body ratio for the iPhone X is about 83%.

To fully appreciate the Mix 4—which I should probably mention is only a prototype at this point—you should probably watch this unboxing and demo:

A cursory check of XDA indicates that there are at least a couple of unofficial TWRP recoveries available for previous Mix devices; if this Mix 4 comes to market in its current form I'm betting it'll prove popular enough to get rooted soon after.

There's already mounting evidence that we've reached peak smartphone growth—see Exhibit A here and Exhibit B here; now we have our first indication that smartphone app growth has also peaked. The analytics company appfigures makes its case in this chart:

According to their research, the number of titles in Apple's App Store declined for the first time in 2017. So how do you explain the continuing growth of Google's Android equivalent? Well, there's a chart for that, too:

As most Android users already know, the majority of apps are developed for iOS first, then ported to Android later. So while the number of titles published in Google Play saw continued growth last year, a similar contraction is likely to occur at some point.

What does all this mean? Less apps, obviously, but hopefully better ones.

David Ruddock, the managing editor of Android Police, has just completed a two-week test drive of Android P Developer Preview 1. I've already covered the visual overhaul of the UI in a previous post; today I present to you a quick summary of David's thoughts on other aspects of this first test build.

    1. Theming is Hard

... Especially without user-selectable controls. On other Android devices, like ones from OnePlus and Samsung, theming is actually pretty easy. But for some reason Google will only give you a dark theme if you select a dark wallpaper, and even then your notification cards and Google Feed will remain their regular garish white.

    2. Smart Rotate is Neat

If you find auto-rotate annoying and keep your phone locked in portrait mode then you'll surely appreciate this new feature. When you rotate your phone to landscape a button will magically appear in your navigation bar so that you can rotate your screen manually to match. Smart!

    3. Screenshot Editors are Handy

Android P now has a native screenshot editor. There's nothing especially groundbreaking here; Android ROMs from other OEMs—again, like OnePlus and Samsung—have offered this functionality for quite some time.

Indeed, nothing I'm seeing in this Android Police report has me terribly excited about Android P. Not so long ago a new version of Android meant new features and commits to AOSP that every device builder could use; nowadays it seems like Google is just playing catch-up to other OEMs.

You may have heard that the latest update to Instagram will remove its companion app for WatchOS. If you read the same 9to5Mac story that I did then you'll also know that Amazon, eBay, Google Maps, Slack and Whole Foods have already abandoned the Apple Watch.

And it's not a big deal. At least, I don't think so.

There are two reasons why this is happening. The first is pragmatic—in the case of Instagram, continued support for WatchOS would require a rewrite of the software using a newer SDK. Instagram likely decided that it wouldn't be worth the effort, which brings us to reason number two: Just because you're wearing a small computer on your wrist doesn't mean it should be used like a computer on your wrist. I can't see how swiping through tiny thumbnails of your Instagram feed would be in any way better than using a full-sized iPhone. And using a watch to make an Amazon purchase or to put an item up for auction on eBay sounds like a terrible experience.

Presumably users will still get notifications for these abandoned apps through WatchOS itself. I personally don't see this as any kind of crisis—rather the opposite, a healthy culling of the herd. After all, not every app on your phone needs to be duplicated on your wrist.

Google is Planning a Mid-Range Pixel for India

    3. Rumors

If this rumor turns out to be true then Google is going to have a grey market sensation on its hands.

The Economic Times of India reports that Mountain View is planning a big sales push into the subcontinent—which, last time I checked, was the second largest smartphone market in the world. The initiative will include official sales channels for Google's high-end Pixelbook, Google Home and other home automation products and apparently a mid-range Pixel phone as well.

SlashGear thinks that the phone will be revealed this summer, and cites the HTC Desire 12 as a reference for specs:

    5.5 inch, 720 x 1440 pixel display
    MediaTek MT6739 processor
2 or 3 GB RAM, 32 GB storage + microSD
    13 megapixels rear-facing camera
    2,730 mAh battery

While I agree that a mid-range Pixel would most likely be built by HTC talent, those specs seem a bit underwhelming in a market where overachieving OnePlus phones (for example) seem to do quite well.

One thing's for sure: if there is to be a made-for-India Pixel it will almost certainly require dual SIM support, and will therefore never come to the Americas. At least not from your carrier.
