Although we've known about T-Mobile's streaming TV ambitions for over a year now the new FCC filing does hint at some form of imminent launch.

Spotted first by Variety, this box is called the “T-Mobile Mini” in the user manual and is made by Kaonmedia, the same company that made set-top boxes for Layer3 TV.

Per the diagram below there is a T-Mobile logo on the front, along with an Ethernet port, HDMI in/out, and of course a power port. There’s also support for USB, 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth LE.

Although we still don't know the exact date of launch T-Mobile did hint that their new service would launch "later this year," with a mobile launch in 2019.

Well we can't say we didn't see this coming.

In an October 25th filing to the FCC, T-Mobile US urges the government body to strip the company of its vast spectrum holdings because Dish has no immediate plans to build much of it out. T-Mobile accused the satellite TV operator of: "warehousing spectrum."




Not holding anything back T-Mobile claims that Dish is violating commission rules with their plan to build out an NB-IoT network by 2020 since it'd only use about 2% of their vast 95 MHz of nationwide spectrum holdings. At times the Magenta carrier also invoked his royal majesty himself by citing President Trump’s recent call to free up more spectrum for 5G. Go big or go home, right?

According to Dish their "phase one," plan includes launching a nationwide NB-IoT network for IoT services by 2020 at the cost of $1 billion. Phase two would consist of building a nationwide 5G network to the tune of $10 billion but so far hasn't given us an estimated completion date.

I can't say I'm surprised that T-Mobile has gone after Dish like a spurned love partner. After all Dish competed directly with T-Mobile by acquiring a large sum of 600 MHz spectrum that T-Mobile would have loved to own and Dish has also been one of the biggest critics of the proposed T-Mobile-Sprint merger.

Chalk this up as another win for the Un-carrier!

CIRP, a white glove securities research and analysis firm to the investment community shared some new information in regards to Q3 results for the major US wireless carriers. Their analysis proved T-Mobile was the clear leader with the highest customer retention rate as well as seeing the greatest customer growth.

The big takeway:

T-Mobile posted the largest customer growth at 19% and 30% of those new customers came from its competitors. The Un-carrier also was able to boast the highest customer retention rate of the bunch with 85%.

Verizon, the only other carrier to see customer growth, grew as much as 4%. Sprint posted a loss of 5% while AT&T, the 2nd largest carrier in terms of subscribers, rounded out the bunch with a loss of 6%.

In terms to retention Verizon came in 2nd with 82%, AT&T third with 78% and Sprint with 72%.

CIRP partner and co-founder Mike Levin made mention how the tables have turned for Verizon and AT&T who historically have been the clear leaders when it comes to growth and retention:

“We take a quarterly view of loyalty and churn, focusing on customers who activate a phone in the quarter,” said Mike Levin, Partner and Co-Founder of CIRP. “Retention rates vary from 72% for Sprint to 85% for T-Mobile. The traditional leaders have been AT&T and Verizon, which are now in the middle with 78% and 82% retention. New customers make up the rest of the equation. T-Mobile is leading there, too, bringing in 1.5 to 2 times more new customers relative to their base than their main competitors.”

From an industry perspective, Palm is hoping to create a new category of devices that customers will soon realize they can't live without. Verizon is watching this closely to see if customers are willng to pad thier bills and increase DARPU (Data Average Revenue per User).

T-Mobile readers have well known for some time that their favorite carrier offers Equipment Installment Plans that cover a 24 month period. According to a few customers they are seeing something different when they log into My T-Mobile and try to add a new line or upgrade.

According to TMoNews Reader P Doobs, T-Mobile offered him a 36 month EIP on the Samsung Note 9 bringing the price to $24.17 per month. I logged in to my account and I was also offered the same 36 month EIP option but only for the Note 9 so far.



Why would anyone want to be locked to a 36 month EIP in the first place? Well it allows users who want an expensive flagship device to get it at zero down with lower monthly payments. Plus you don't incurr any interest and you can always pay it off early at any time.

Word on the street is that Verizon has sent voluntary severance packages last month to roughly 44,000 employees equaling more than 25% of its New York staff. Yikes! Part of the severance package will include 3 weeks paid salary for every year employed.

Speaking to the Wall St. Journal a Verizon spokesman confirmed this and said its severance efforts were in part to save $10 billion and to help defray the cost of building its 5G network.

Chief executive Hans Vestberg wrote in a memo sent to employees that: "The severance packages will give Verizon an opportunity to find more efficiencies in the size and scope of our V Team and help expedite the building of an innovative operating model for our future."

Infosys, an Indian IT outsourcing company recently won a bid from Verizon to the tune of $1 billion. With that Verizon will outsource 30% of its IT staff to the Indian firm affecting 2,500 US employees. To rub salt into the wound of those affected Verizon will only pay out severance for these employees if they accept a job overseas and actually take it.

Our hearts and condolences go out to all Verizon employees and their families who are affected by this.

It's been a year or so since we've seen this side of John. I must say it cracked me up a little.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere was not impressed with Verizon's 5G Home Service Launch, unleashing tweet after tweet roasting the Big Red mobile giant on Monday.

Reading through the lines T-Mobile is subtly letting America know it will launch its 5G NR service based on industry standards, that it will be mobile and available to a much larger audience.

In fact T-Mobile plans to launch presumably the nation's largest 5G NR network in roughly 30 cities by years end using mmWave and low band spectrum albeit without any 5G capable device until early next year. Plus when combined with Sprint they will have access to Sprint's vast 120 MHz of 2.5 GHz spectrum covering 90% of the top 100 US markets that will allow them to build a 5G network that is the envy of everyone.

I doubt Verizon's leadership is amused and we'll likely see their comeback response later today. Still it's nice to see a little bit of that antagonistic Uncarrier spirit that put T-Mobile US on the map and on the industry's radar!

Residents of the most politically progressive state in the Union just got the country’s strictest Net Neutrality protections, thanks to a bill that Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law Sunday.

Under this new law ISP's can't block or slow certain specific types of content or applications. They also can't charge app developers or content providers extra fees in order to provide their content to their customers faster.

California isn't the only state passing its own Net Neutrality laws nor is it the first. Fellow west coast states Washington and Oregon have both passed laws of their own. But only California so far has matched Obama-era federal Net Neutrality regulations repealed by the Federal Communications Commission in June.

Barbara van Schewick, a professor at Stanford Law School said in a statement: “Most people don’t understand how hard it is to do a solid Net Neutrality law. What’s so special about California is that it includes not just two pages of rules, but all of the important protections from the text of the order and as a result closes the loopholes.”

Some of the loopholes Barbara addressed include "zero-rating," and those pesky interconnection fees.

For those unaware, California is not only the largest economy in the United States it's also the fifth largest economy in the entire world. That ensures not only its leadership but also its influence on other states pursuing similar tactics. This boldness and influence is bound to draw the ire of the current Presidential Administration who is currently in the midst of several legal battles with the state and who worked so hard to repeal Net Neutrality on a national level as we formerly knew it.

But in order for the law to be effective it will first have to survive. Large corporate beheamouths like AT&T and Comcast have lobbied heavily against the bill. Both claim that the new rules will result in higher prices for consumers. On the flip side companies like: Twilio, Etsy and Sonos have thrown in their support of the bill. So far California born companies like: Apple, Google and Facebook have been silent on the matter.

While we don't know too many details quite yet apparently AT&T is poised to refarm some of its low band spectrum for 5G next year. Although many of us have assumed that AT&T would do this up to this point they haven't made it publicly known.

So far AT&T has been focusing on its 39 GHz spectrum (mmWave) which it plans to use in urban hot spots for 5G NR. While this spectrum is great for speeds in small areas; presumably great for fixed wireless broadband; but it's not economical to be used over large geographic areas.

AT&T knows that it needs to utilize spectrum that goes greater distances and that performs better indoors without the aid of small cells or repeaters when it comes to mobile. This will allow it to better compete in coverage with T-Mobile who is deploying its 5G NR anchor network using low band as well.

Gordon Mansfield, VP of Converged Access and Device Technology at AT&T said: “We’ll let the market and our customers determine the pace at which we deploy that additional spectrum. These lower bands have different propagation characteristics vs. mmWave, such as longer transmission distances and better penetration through buildings and other obstructions,” which makes them a strong complement. While we don’t have a specific deployment timeline for low-band spectrum, we’ll likely start deploying it next year as compatible chipsets become available.”

AT&T has a plethora of low band spectrum but also mid band spectrum much of which could be refarmed at some point. The operator’s LTE network for example primarily works on its AWS-1 and 700 MHz spectrum licenses, but can also stretch into its WCS holdings and other spectrum bands. AT&T says that the sub-6 GHz radios that they have been deploying this year are all 5G ready and thus 5G can be turned on through software as capacity dictates.

In a recent filing called: “Sprint’s Network Faces Severe Challenges” the beleaguered carrier overlays its LTE coverage against T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon. By showcasing only its LTE network it really shows the disparity against its competitors.

But there is a reason behind the madness. By industry perspective it appears that Sprint may be trying to win sympathy as a strategy to win over the FCC's blessing. It feels that by pointing out its weaknesses the whole concept of allowing the merger to proceed should be a no-brainer.

The whole concept of in-flight Wi-Fi is a relatively recent phenomena. Boeing offered the service in 2001, Airbus in 2005 and more recently GoGo in 2008.

When it was introduced the concept was formed with low bandwidth in mind meaning each flight could only offer speeds not too much faster than dial up.

Then came ground based systems that offered slow 3G like speeds. But besides being slow this service only worked while the airplane was over land meaning that sea bound flights were out of luck.

Disappointed customers are demanding faster service but the industry couldn't keep up with demand. Unlike smartphones that are designed to be upgraded often in-flight systems were built to last a decade or more so thus more of the same year after year.
