Sprint's CEO recently came out blasting the proposed AT&T, T-Mobile deal saying it would stifle competition and innovation in the industry:

“If AT&T is allowed to swallow T-Mobile, competition, innovation… will be stifled in the mobile industry.”
His comments come on the same day that the FCC is set to review the deal.

The AT&T and T-Mobile deal would create the U.S.'s largest wireless carrier by a sizable margin with the combined entities along with Verizon Wireless comprising approximately 80 percent of the U.S. market.

What do you think about this? Is this good or bad for the industry? Would a Sprint buyout of T-Mobile be a better option?

    You won't hear him now.

Verizon Wireless is taking its famous cell phone commercials -- featuring actor Paul Marcarelli uttering the phrase, "Can you hear me now?" -- in a new direction.

In a new profile in The Atlantic, Marcarelli says he was informed of the change via email last September.

"Don't feel bad for me, but I'm definitely glad that chapter is over," he said. "Most people my age are now trying to trade in their street cred for money, and I kind of made my money."

Marcarelli landed the role of Test Man nine years ago. At first, he says he was embarrassed. "The reality was, it was a job," he says.

The Street.com posts their list of the last decade's ugliest cell phones:

"Attractive cell phones are easy to find.

Ever since Motorola's Razr and, later, the Apple iPhone, manufacturers have had to work hard on pleasing designs. Gorgeous, giant glass fronts framed in elegant black, sleek steel or shiny chrome, smartphones pack brains and beauty.

But not always. Before the mobile phone industry got all busy with design makeovers and tummy tucks, there were -- and still are -- some delightfully hideous phones that represented the other side of the beauty trend. The Street has gone back through the past decade to dig up some of the best examples of designs that make you wince and stare in disbelief. The clueless stylings, the flights of fancy into odd shapes, the obsession with square versus rounded -- it is a wonderfully colorful history."

Neowin.net is reporting on a issue brought up in Apple's official discussion forums here that the iPhone 4's front-facing camera might be taking photos of its users without their knowledge.

This was corroborated by other users in the aforementioned Apple forums discussion thread who launched FaceTime to see seemingly random photos of themselves taken when they were sure they weren't using the feature.

Has this happened to anyone else?

A team of testers from BTIG Research conducted approximately 1,000 speed tests in New York comparing the 4G data speeds between Verizon's HTC Thunderbolt (LTE) and Sprint's HTC EVO 4G (WiMAX) and found that Verizon's LTE network was consistently faster, more reliable, and offered better coverage.

The tests were done using Apple's iPad 2 and a Windows laptop connected to the phones via their hotspot feature.

    What are your experiences?

It is with great sadness that Howard has asked me to announce that HowardForums will be closing just shy of our 10th anniversary of being online.

Recently Howard has been experiencing an existential crisis. It started off with him being annoyed by the Android ecosystem's fragmentation. Then it led to his feeling trapped by iTunes on his iPhone. Next he spent five hours on the phone complaining about BlackBerry's dated devices followed by days of wondering when his Windows Phone 7 device would be updated.

Anyways let's just say that Howard has just lost interest in cell phones and went back to using his MOTO RAZR.

We appreciate everyone who has stuck with us over the last 10 years. Any member who has been with us for the last 12 years will receive a cell phone of their choice.

Thanks for making this a great forum... We'll see you around Teh Interwebz.

If you're still waiting for NoDo to be delivered to your device, some of you may be able to get it now via a workaround if your device is in the "delivering update" phase. Here's how:

    1. Start Zune
    2. Turn off Data connection and Wifi on the Phone
    3. Connect the Phone with the PC (USB)
    4. Start the update search in Zune
    5. About 3 seconds later, disconnect your PC from the internet (Turn WLAN off).
    6. Zune finds NoDo-Update. Press OK.
    7. Connect to the internet again and install the update.
It can take a couple tries before it works. Let us know if this works for you.

Amazon's new Android Appstore includes a feature that allows you to "test drive" an app for 30 minutes before buying. It essentially creates a virtual Android device and launches the app inside it where you can play around with it before deciding to buy it. It currently only works from your computer, test drives aren't support on mobile devices.

Microsoft has started pushing out the long awaited "NoDo" Windows Phone 7 update. It should be available worldwide on all handsets by the end of the week.

    The update provides the following:

    March 2011
    OS version: 7.0.7390.0

    • Copy & paste. You asked for it—now it's here. Just tap a word and drag the arrows to copy and paste it on your phone. You can copy text from emails, text messages, web pages, and Office Mobile documents, and paste it anywhere you can type. To learn more, see Copy & paste.

    • Faster apps and games. Nobody likes to wait. That's why we've whittled down the time it takes for apps and games to start up and resume. It's all part of our focus on getting you to the things you love, easier and faster.

    • Better Marketplace search. We've streamlined Marketplace search to make it easier to find specific apps, games, or music. Press the Search button in the Apps or Games section of Marketplace and you'll see only apps or games in the results. Press Search in the Music section of Marketplace to search just the music catalog.

    • Other Marketplace improvements. We've improved the stability of Marketplace while you download apps. We've also improved the experience of downloading apps larger than 20 megabytes, upgrading from trial apps to paid apps, using a credit card with an address outside the United States, sharing links to apps via email, sorting Xbox LIVE games by release date, and creating an Xbox LIVE account from within the Games Hub.

    • Wi-Fi improvements. We now display your phone's Media Access Control (MAC) address in Settings. (You might need this info if you try to connect to a Wi-Fi network that uses MAC address filtering. To learn more, see Connect to a Wi-Fi network.) We've also removed the limit on the number of Wi-Fi profiles that you can store and reduced the time it takes to start your phone if you've stored lots of Wi-Fi profiles.

    • Outlook improvements. We've improved the experience of viewing iPhone photo attachments you receive from a non-Exchange-based email account (such as a Google Mail, Hotmail, or Yahoo! Mail account), using the Global Address List (GAL) when connecting to Exchange Server 2003 using Exchange ActiveSync, and working with email display names that contain brackets (for example, "David Alexander [Contoso]").

    • Messaging improvements. We've improved the experience of receiving Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) messages if your phone uses a PIN-locked SIM.

    • Facebook integration. We've improved the experience of syncing Facebook accounts.

    • Camera improvements. We've improved the stability of switching between camera and video modes.

    • Audio improvements. We've improved the experience of using a Bluetooth headset to make calls when you're playing music or videos.

    • Other performance improvements. This month's update also includes software from several phone manufacturers that improves the performance of specific models. Naturally, if you don't have one of the affected models, we won't install this portion of the update on your phone.

"We're not interested in Sprint. We don't need them," said Mead, speaking to Reuters ahead of the CTIA Wireless Conference.
Verizon will not oppose the AT&T/T-Mobile deal, nor are they interested in purchasing Sprint to leap back in front of AT&T in subscriber numbers. Instead:

The CEO said the company did not want to be distracted from its goal of being the most profitable U.S. wireless operator.

AT&T has begun sending letters, emails and text messages to those they suspect are tethering without a required tethering plan. In essence they are instructing those users to cease and desist, volunteer to sign up for a tethering plan, or otherwise be forced onto a tethering plan. This would affect users who've jailbroken their iPhones and using apps such as MyTether and MyWi to tether their computers with their devices.

    Anyone gotten this?

    More: TiPb

UPDATE: It appears that users who don't tether at all are also receiving the same message and that perhaps AT&T is simply targeting users with high data usage. Both MyWi and TetherMe don't show any tethering data usage under Settings--General--Usage. modmyi.com
