SAT-550 might be activated if in Europe certainly not in US.
I have several Globalstar 1600s and a Globalstar SAT-550 which 900 Mhz gem. One day I will activate the 1600.

I was on the 10 cents/min plan that changed to 20 cents/min. I holding on to my i355 and I 'll pick up a couple more i355s and Nextel sim cards in order to use DirectTalk at work.

You are very lucky to get that phone. I would try T-Mobile and AT&T. Would buy the cheapest T-Mobile I could find usually the Nokia 1661 and a cheap ATT GoPhone Samsung A107 both from RadioShack....
