They didn't actually test other SIMs (e.g. their old AT&T SIM) to see if it's truly locked. Seems more likely it's just the app saying it's locked when it isn't.

From what I remember reading, AT&T is no longer unlocking non-customers phones like they used to. I'd be thrilled to hear otherwise. Especially if they unlock Cricket devices.
Unless it came unlocked that's worthless to the OP.
You want a phone on this list to guarantee you'll still have service after February 2022 (when AT&T shuts off 3G).
The Alcatel QuickFlip 4044C looks like a cheaper option at $40 unlocked on...
