    Omaha, NE 3G

About a month ago I talked to a rep at the Corp Store @ 144th and Center, who told me that he had heard that they were planning on turning Omaha's 3G on at the end of Jan or begining of Feb. As of now I see no 3G on my Tilt. Anyone else hear anything regarding 3G in this area?

Looks like it _could_ be some time this year.

I've yet to see 3G anywhere in Omaha or the surrounding metro area.

Me either. I was curious if anyone in the area was more "in the know" than I am regarding any plans AT&T had. I have pretty much resigned myself to having to wait an eternity for the upgrade.

Why do you think I still plug along with an old V3?

There are other profitable reasons as well, but no 3G is primary.

    Off-topic:
Stay in touch on here. I don't know many at&t users in the Omaha area.

Not long before I moved to Omaha from Lincoln I talked to a CS rep about it and she said that, according to her information at that time, there were no plans to add 3G in the area. A store employee in Lincoln told me that it would probably be quite some time before the area got 3G, as it was one of the last places to get EDGE, but of course that was Lincoln and not Omaha.

Per AT&T's announcement today that they're going to add 3G in 80 cities this year, I'll be very upset if Omaha is not among that list. Omaha-Council Bluffs is the 60th largest metropolitan area in the country, has a population that will be very near to 1 million by the 2010 census, and is home to several high profile companies in varying sectors of the economy; yet we get treated like a backwater town (although to be fair, Counciltucky does kind of feel and look like a dump). I don't want to go off on a tangent, but in all honesty AT&T's feet-dragging has me considering the idea of dropping my AT&T data plan and picking up a separate SERO line just for data (Sprint employee told me March for Rev.A in Omaha, hopefully they haven't gone bankrupt by then), so they really need to get their business in order.

    Edit:

This should mean that Omaha is getting 3G. We're the 44th largest city proper in the US and the 60th largest metro, so we should be covered under whatever they mean by 'top 100'.

Hey! Counciltucky is getting better It's not quite good for many yet, but its ALOT better then it was 10-15 years ago, before the Casino's moved in more heavily, and finally had a "boom" in the business end to get stuff going. Sad..considering alot of anti-casino groups say it ruins people/towns. Seems to be the opposite here

But I do hope 3G gets into the Omaha area soon. I, too, am surprised at how long its taking since its not exactly a small area. Even though I don't have at&t now, if the LG Vu is good enough, I'll switch.

I was an ATT (TDMA then GSM) customer in Lincoln/Omaha for 6 years. I finally gave up on them after being told that 3G was "any day now" for over a year (I even got an LG CU500 under that pretense). With Sprint's cheap plans, I decided to give them a try under the 30 day trial... and I have to say the coverage (for me) is far superior. And by the way, Sprint has Rev A here already and has for many months--and wow is it fast. I miss the flexibility of GSM technology, but I'd rather have fast data and be able to make calls.

Google's move into CB is definitely going to push the demand for EVDO and 3G quite a bit, I think.

I've really enjoyed reading this information regarding the networks in my "backyard" everyone. Thank you for the intelligent discussion.

Thread is extremely old by now but figured I would bump it because its relevant. Radio "DJ" was shilling at&t and she mentioned 3G will be in Omaha soon. Didn't give an exact date but I imagine soon is hopefully in 6 months or less...

I upgraded my Tilt to an iPhone 3g this summer and they told me that they were going to turn in 3g earlier this year but decided to hold off until the end of the year to add some new towers. Not sure if I believe that, but they told me "by the end of the year". Then again, they said the same thing last year....

Keep this thread going if you hear anything useful.

I saw them adding/changing antennas on a couple sites a couple months ago. I hope the switch gets thrown soon. GSM has had deteriorated lately, IMO. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yeah, I have experienced more problems with the at&t network recently as well. I'm not sure the cause, but am hopeful it has something to do with the transition to 3G. I am still hopeful for November, since it was indicated in a July 2008 Omaha World Herald article that November was the pegged month to flip the 3G switch.

I'm curious if anyone has seen or heard anything else...looking for some good quality concrete info.
