    Media Net Unlimited and 3G

Since I'm getting a good discount off AT&T, I decided to switch to AT&T today to take advantage of the 3G. I can't wait to get my phones setup with 3G, and was just wondering how long it usually takes for my Media Net Unlimited to get online. I set my E71-2 to Dual Mode, and tried going online, and it seems to be still using the EDGE service. I went into my Access Point and selected Media Net Unlimited also.

I know I can be a little impatient, but does anyone know how long it'll take?

And that is how the cookie crumbles.

It's not that it takes long, it's that you must not be in a 3g coverage area, i recently ported over to at&t from tmobile and yeah i am glad to have 3g when i am in the right area.

MEdia Net Unlimited is a feature sold by AT&T Mobility to give unlimited Internet connectivity. It is not something you can select on your phone. When you are in a 3G area, you may or may not get a 3G connection all the time. In a large metropolitan area such as New York, subscribers may have exceeded the capacity of the wireless network to provide the high speed connections requested.

okay thanks everyone, seems like 3G is not available to my area. but just to make sure, I should select AT&T Media Net as my access point correct? And no AT&T Internet.

Try changing the network mode to UMTS only instead of dual mode and see if that helps you out.

Yup tried doing that, and it showed 3G for a brief moment before the signal just completely died. So I'm assuming no 3G in my area.

As a side note, did anyone figure out how to get MobileMe working on the E71? I currently have Seven installed for push email and for some reason my MobileMe account is unable to connect.

I'm looking at the AT&T coverage map and after inputting my zip code, I see that my area is well covered with 3G. So unless the map is lying, then something is really weird with this.

MediaNet AP uses a proxy and Internet AP doesn't. You may find that using the MediaNet AP your browser will have issues when rendering graphic files on webpages.

I usually use AT&T Internet also. You don't need to do anything special to get 3G. It should Just Work(tm).

Last night, for the first time, I was in an area with 1900MHz 3G. I was standing about 15 feet from one of AT&T's antennas with an excellent signal. I thought "what a good place to run a speed test." I got 196Kbps on the first test. At least the latency was better than EDGE, even if the speed wasn't...

My point being that sometimes backhaul or other factors can prevent the 1Mbps or better speed one expects with a 3G phone in good coverage.

Are you sure you have an E71-2, and not a -1 or -3? As in, look at the battery under the label even if you think you're sure.
