...I thought last.fm was going to shut off access from 3rd party players soon, making Mobbler, etc, functional only for a few more months (until last.fm shuts off access).

Or am I wrong? Seems they would stop development if their software was going to be rendered useless in a few months...

How will this update affect Steve Punters' S60 project?
I've got to go through his thread all day tomorrow to see what I've been missing in Last.FM.

From what I have gathered from the Last.FM info, 3rd party apps in *any* country won't be able to stream unless the user is a paid subscriber. Typically, they're not supposed to allow mobile clients to stream over cellular networks, but they've got an official iPhone and Android client, and it sounds like the Last.FM guys are going to take the leading client for other platforms 'under their wing' so to speak, to make sure they're still around. At least that's how it sounds for Mobbler.

This latest beta of Mobbler is also supposedly working on implementing a username check, which would make sense if that will be the determining factor as to whether you can stream or not.

If you're a heavy Last.FM user, then $3/mo is really not a big deal.

It's not the user name, it's the IP address. If you log into the last.fm site with Skyfire you get free last.fm radio streams anywhere, even if you're not a last.fm subscriber.
