r765 freaking hardcore, oil industry probably has a use for those in the us and in the middle east where iDEN is in a bit of a "revival" so to speak.
the last thing you want is no signal, poor audio or a device than can't withstand a hard drop or two, or three when people's lives on the line. The XTS5000 our guys carry survive being thrown around in fights when officers roll on the ground fighting some geeked up meth heads, and is the same radio carried in the front pocket of every firefighters' turnout gear where temperatures there easily reach in excess of 300 degrees F in a structure fire. So yes, the r765 is expensive, it is also designed for similar harsh use. The IS version is rated intrinsically safe for use in hazardous environments such as mining, petroleum, manufacturing facilities where gases ignited by a small spark (even that from button contacts being closed on a keypad) can really ruin ALOT of people's day.
These aren't toys for Iphone geeks. These are professional TOOLS.

This is taylor made for the oil industry. Most people obviously wouldn't see the real differences of this phone as compared to a regular cell phone unless they demo'd it. That would be cool to watch seeing what the r765 series could endure first hand.
I remember when Nextel was young and a company I worked for at the time was given a set to try for a weekend event. Several days before, one employee drove up into Washington about 200 miles, we thought it was wild how it could work over such long distances with no lag.
I don't remember the first small number of phones we got, but later on alot of us were issued them and I used these for a while:

ahh..yes, the i370 and i600...I still have a 1998 catalog from Nextel with all the accessories and Motorola part numbers "Nextel...you've never used a phone like this before."

I still had some i600's in service until about 2004. They were retired as they won't support rebanding and could not support cross-fleet DC.
They were tough radios, and well built. Certainly more advanced than the IS-136 phones Bellsouth mobility sold us at the time (anyone else have the Nokia 2160 or Ericsson DF-388vi? What pieces of crap they were.) when they went to their first digital cellular system back then.

Nextel has had good coverage here in Oregon, it's better than T-Mobile whom I had for just shy of 9 years until recently. I have had company Nextels off and on since '97 ?
NOTE: The white areas are remote very lightly populated or NOT populated(BLM Land). Western part of the state is mountainous treed while the central/eastern part of the state is mountainous high desert terrain. ie: Lots of CB's out there!
Example: Portland,OR. is barely above sea level. Metro Area pop 2,175,113

I have been following this phone since its been announced.
I want this bad boy so bad! Too bad the price is so cost prohibitive. It could be because you are paying for the name and the advancements in technology.
I think if you wait, the price will go down, just like everything else. Two years from now, who will really want these radios. Still just us. And they will be more affordable.
But I have to say, I love, love love this radio. I am a huge fan of MotoTalk and probably the only one in this forum that uses it daily. As a MotoTalk fan, this radio is bar none. This is the best thing IDEN has. Bottom Line.

Although I share your sentiments regarding price Jax, I wouldn't hold my breath. The i325 didn't budge much in the price department.

A buddy of mine just stopped by (he works for SoCo's emergency operations center) and was showing it off, his replaced his old i325IS. It feels alot like a MotoTRBO portable, very much like the XPR6500:

Even uses the same accessory connector as the XPR's, so it looks like this is what chassis they used to build off of. Very solid design, his only complaint was the battery life, it's about a 1/3 of the i325IS but their rep is supposedly ordering extra batteries for all the fleet. They even have IMPRES batteries available for the 765 which is great as they can be used with the XTS series IMPRES chargers with an adapter.
I doubt this will ever come down in price. It's an application specific radio with a limited market to industrial and public safety. It sure is nice, the screen is so bright you can read it across a lit room. VERY LOUD audio, as loud as our XTS5000's and excellent tone, could easily hear it in a crowded stadium with no difficulty.
He also told me GSP is ordering them to replace their 355's and 325's, Georgia State Patrol uses SoCo for administrative ops and interoperability, in addition to their VHF and 800 stuff. (Troopers carry both radios in some areas)

I have had the SprintNextel R765IS for about a week now and it is THE top of the line phone. My big advantage to upgrading was the SIM card. Now instead of carrying my trusty "brick" everywhere, I can pop the SIM out and into a flip phone for the night out. Since 2001 until now I carried a R750 24/7 and the 765 is a direct replacement for it. $1884 from Sprint with a 2yr contract. In my line of work everything I use is rugged from my watch Rolex DeepSea to my PDA which is a Motorola MC75, XTS5000R and Thales T25 portables. The only improvement I would make to the 765 and something I miss, is the SMA antenna connector. On the 750 I never used the stock antenna 99.9% of the time I use a XTS 800 1/2 wave. In bad signal areas I would switch to the 1/2 wave dipole. The other would be the add a audio port to use a standard headset. In reguards to the i600, 10 years ago they had a software up date to make them cross fleet and they are compatable with rebanding...we still have them.

I am looking to take over a former *Centennial Wireless* Account that was converted to *VERIZON*. Preferably one with a data card, but I won't discriminate if it's a voice plan with a dumbphone/smartphone/whatever. If it's a former Centennial Account and is now a VERIZON account, but still has the Centennial Plan on it, then I AM INTERESTED!

Anyone can get the phone. There is really nothing special about getting it. Dealer can get them via the order entry system. Hell, I could get you one.

No hoops, just contacted my Sprint sales rep, placed the order and it was shipped the same day, overnight UPS. You can also call Sprintnextel and talk to sales and they will do the same. $2034.99 retail, 1884.99 with 2yr contract. I would have liked the r765 but they will only sell the IS version. I wonder if they don't want a 1 watt unit on their system. On the other hand Southernlink will only sell the 1 watt version for $850...I tried to get theirs but they will not sell outside of their service area. By the way, I found an aftermarket RF adapter that fits the i365is and the r765, I'm still trying to locate an audio adapter for a standard headset.
