BART riders get cellular service in Transbay Tube

BART riders now can get cell phone service as they ride through the Transbay Tube connecting Oakland and San Francisco.
Four major cell phone companies — AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint/Nextel and Verizon — have activated wireless service in the tube, BART announced this week.
The added service was paid for by the cell phone companies, not the public transit agency, said BART board President James Fang of San Francisco.
With the Transbay Tube wired, cell phone service is now offered in 35 percent of BART's tunnels and eight of its 16 underground stations.

NYC isn't getting it for a while...

    I don't see why Sprint can't just install a million airwaves...Just saying...

Nice! This would have been awesome the two months that I had to live in Fremont and commute to school (SFSU) everyday.

I passed through downtown Oakland today with my T-Mobile phone. There was T-Mobile coverage from West Oakland end of the WYE through to the MacArthur end of the WYE. Handoffs were not too great, but this may be due to need for tuning or due to the fact that LACs vary in the area.

I'll try to bring along a Sprint handset next time I'm there.

    Old news.

This has been online since December =)

There is no way you can chat on the phone in though -- BART is too loud/noisy.

You can surely text/surf the web though.

Also, Free WiFi is available throughout the tunnel/downtown stations.

I think you're confusing the Transbay Tube with the Wye, but if you have a source on the WYE having coverage in December please pass it along.

I'm talking about the transbay tube. Not hard to miss.

Between West Oakland and Embarcadero .

Here is the official press article:

EDIT, now looking at this -- this is an old topic that was revived.

    Sorry for the confusion

It really is impossible to talk on the phone in the tube... but yea, I guess texting and internet is nice.
