Ringtone questions - Samsung U640 Convoy

I have spent hours searching for answers (here and elsewhere) and wanted to see if any of you can help me. (Yes - I have read the thread on U640 USB communications and many others.)

It is possible to get the Convoy to recognize MIDI ringtones by copying them into the My Ringtones or My Sounds folders on the SD card. The phone/firmware does not seem to recognize MP3 ringtones copied to the card. Does someone know of any other audio file formats compatible with the U640 that might work when copied to the card? There are some applications that will transcribe MIDI notation from MP3 or WAV files - but they are still in their infancy and cost money (not to mention all the time and trouble).

Anything you can tell me would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Rob

    Other formats

I have tried at least ten different formats, none of which worked. I found on one site, however, that this phone only allows one to use ringtones which have been purchased through a verizon store. You can use your sound files as ringtones though, and you can record anything you hear, such as voices, animals, or songs on the radio, and use it as your ringtone or contact id.

To find record click menu/media center/music and tones/my sounds
and it's at the top of the screen. If you record music though, the quality isn't very good.

You can use you own ringtones and load them yourself using QPST! It's easy once you get the hang of it! I make my own and have about 300 that are all mp3s..................

    MP3's on the Samsung Convoy

Took a bit of work but it's very possible. Renaming to .QCP doesn't work.

First, you have to get a copy of Qualcomm's "PureVoice"

    Google it and download it.

With PureVoice, open your MP3. It won't be listed as a file type so select *.*. It WILL open mp3's though. Check and make sure it sounds ok, you can speed it up and slow it down.

Then, save it as a .QCP file.

Connect your Convoy to your PC (under Tools/USB Mass Storage). I have a 4 gig card in mine so I upload it to the card in the "my_ringtones" folder.

Once you disconnect, you have a new MP3 ringtone.

Thank you for your suggestions which I folowed faithfully. I did manage to save my mp3 files as .qcp files following your instructions and have stored these on my 2gb card in the "my ringtones" folder on tshe card. However I am not able to access this folder with the new ringtones. How should I proceed?
    Your advice is appreciated!

    Winneba:

Did you see these other two suggestions for putting ringtones onto the Convoy ?

Ringtones with BitPim, outdated / old method

Ringtones with QPST (Same Procedure listed here works with Bitpim, too!)

I don't like the first guide, for a number of reasons
The first guide will put your ringtones under the "My Sounds" menu.
This means you won't be able to set Alarms or alerts with your custom tones.
It's a pain in the *** to get BitPim to talk to the phone for some people.

The second guide, you can use either QPST software (and bluetooth, no drivers to hassle with), or if you can get BitPim to talk to your phone, the same procedure works with Bitpim too.

This method is better because tones will actually show up under My Ringtones.

This allows you to use them everywhere, alerts, ringtones, alarms, etc.
