Well you couls switch to AT&T, since they are taking over the Verizon (towers) network in the Big Rapids area. But they wont have 3G coverage in that area for probably a couple years, since they move at the speed of snail, my advice is stick with Verizon, since LTE is rolling out very quickly

It has started. If you go to the Verizon web site now and put in your location as 49307, you get redirected to an AT&T info page. Broadband (HSPA) is part of the transition so no, it will not be a couple of years before AT&T 3G is here. Indications are that all of the acquired cell sites are getting HSPA--not GSM.

This is 100% correct. AT&T is starting with 3G in the acquired areas, not upgrading to it later. In fact it will be 7.2mbps HSPA from day 1.

    Kudos to AT&T

Well good for AT&T they are finally doing something right HSPA (3G) in acquired areas.. .then hopefully they will get LTE going soon... next year.. atleast they are skipping HSPA+ in favor of LTE

TMobile is rolling out there HSPA+ very quickly, they almost have the roll out done for this year (POP's)... which Detroit will be covered :-)

That's not true anymore, AT&T has decided to go ahead and deploy HSPA+. Which is a good thing. LTE in it's current form offers almost no benefit over HSPA+. Also, the ITU has declared LTE is NOT 4G and neither is WiMax. They're transitional 4G - just like HSPA+. Only LTE Advanced and WiMax 2 are true 4G. WiMax is SLOWER than HSPA+ and LTE is similar in their current forms.

AT&T has starting trenching for the fiber runs to the cell sites here is Big Rapids. Parts of the university campus here (Ferris State University) will look like war zone for a couple of weeks. Looks like the Verizon --> AT&T followed by Alltel --> Verizon transition is actually on track for early 2011.

Verizon customers got there AT&T letter in Greenville saying they needed to get new phones, I assume other places in Michigan did as well, getting closer.
