    Data plan ETF's / terms

    Hey guys

I got a touch diamond with a dataplan a little more than 2 years ago (past november is 2 years). I'm working from home these days and the cellphone barely gets any use, so I'm considering options to reduce the cost. I'm paying ~ $55 for unlim data + 300 anytimes + 5pm? 6pm? evening & weekends etcetera.

At the time I signed up, I know I committed to a term of data to get a reduced rate on the phone. I believe this was only 2 years, even though I contracted for the phone for 3 years. Could this be right? I recently asked a bell rep in passing what it would cost to cancel, and he told me $20/month remaining for everything, but I dunno if the data thing was included in that. (I think the original requirement was, keep a voice + data plan of $45 for X time, actually)

    1) Can I dump data without incurring a ghastly extra fee now?
    2) What's the absolute cheapest "ride out the contract" plan cost & features?
    3) If I decide I want to cancel the whole shebang, but save my number,
can I port it out to my VOIP provider until I decide to get a new phone?

    thanks for any advice

I believe that after the first year of having data, you can cancel it at no further expense.

Cheapest plan you can probably find is $25-$30/month. If that's too much, then port your number to a prepaid sim that's loaded with a $100 credit to keep it valid for a year.

If you're going to port out then you might as well port out to the provider that you want to be with next. If you're unsure, try WIND for a change. With NO contract or 30 days notice, you're welcome to port out again anytime.

I believe your cancellation fee is $20 for every month remaining or minimum $100 which every is greater plus 1 month cancellation notice.

I've heard about this too that after the first year of having data that you can cancel it at no further expense. How does this work then? No Data cancellation fee? And if I'm on a Voice Plan with 500mb data and pay $40.50 plus tax per month, how much would this be if I cancel the data plan then? How much would it go down by?

    Hey Mstar

Thanks for posting. You say this has changed, you don't mean retroactively do you?
Should I expect to pay a data ETF ? I'm in year 3 of my phone contract, and I dont remember
what they specified as the term of the data originally.
    thanks

It was going forward on renewals and activations.

If you signed a contract before June 30 the old rules apply.

They were actually upset that I leaked it before implementation.

Wow you have to keep your data for the entire 3 years term now? Didn't see that coming. Considering the iPhone 4 is $660 and if you go with Bell's best plan $65 student plan with no additional feature, they would have made that money back in 10 months. After 10 months, you'd still have to pay for data and contract cancellation. No way am I getting myself into this ugly mess with a phone provider.

Is there a cheaper way to get out of the last ~ 7 - 8 months of my contract than to ETF it Mstar?
I think Sammy used to talk about there being a $10 plan out there that wasn't good for anything except ticking off the days. ?
