    AT&T to buy T-Mobile USA.

Wow. This isn't good for us. Goodbye to non-Huwaei AWS handsets? I'm assuming this means there is officially no hope for an AWS iPhone.

Who knows if they will be discontinuing the AWS band, but the gut feeling says possibly, which will be absolutely horrible for Wind/Mobilicity

Actually this could potentially be awesome news.... This might make AT&T push for a penta-band iPhone so that they can spread out all the data traffic to ease the load on their network! If that happens, it could lead to even more penta-band handsets...

AT&T isn't going to just throw away the 1700MHz spectrum that they have now acquired... Take it easy guys. The main reason why companies like Apple have shied away from making penta-band handsets is to not violate exclusivity deals etc. with AT&T. That is now no longer a concern.

Spectrum is valuable. They will take advantage of it. The worst case scenario for us would be if they want to use all the AWS spectrum for LTE. Then they would have to give all T-Mo customers free phones to move onto AT&T's UMTS850/1900 network so that they can free up the 1700MHz spectrum for LTE.

The more realistic scenario is that AT&T will take advantage of the extra spectrum for their existing 3G network. There is no way in hell that they will throw away that spectrum and move all T-Mo customers onto their already-struggling network.

it means there could be more pentaband phones as AT&T could use T-Mobile's 3G network where AT&T's network is over capacity like in SF & NY but we won't see anychanges for atleast a couple of years and an iPhone pentaband we can only hope

If anything I'd assume this is the best chance for the next iPhone to have AWS added.

Oh wow, wtf! Yeah, now there will be no iPhone with AWS.... even if it does come at some point in time, lets remember that Apple is slow as hell to implement stuff. Verizon iPhone took 4 years, they brought onboard that notification designer from Palm and still haven't updated anything, took forever to get a 5 MP camera... F!!!!!

    This really sucks...

It is certainly a possibility now that AT&T will require a an iPhone to have AWS as well to spread the load for sure.

4 years? It took them less than a year to design, test and implement a cdma iPhone 4. And that is much more difficult than adding a new band to the existing hspa iPhone. Heck last year they added two new umts bands to help support for existing carriers in europe/asia. Adding an additional band won't take long.

Wow, totally out of left field. Maybe ATT jumped in between the Sprint-TMo talks and threw down cash that Duetches couldn't resist?

Its bad news for Sprint and T-Mo customers. For us? I'm not calling doom and gloom just yet. I'm thinking they will be smart and use the available AWS freq for atleast the near future, but will eventually switch it to LTE. This makes our(Canada's) upcoming 700mhz auction even more important however.

& honestly, what is the big fascination with an AWS iPhone? If its not available on your carrier, jump ship or live with it.

I was reading an article online and AT&T wants to use the AWS/2100 spectrum from T-Mobile to expand their "4G" network and use it as a side load network when the push LTE out. This is pretty good news for us because Apple may indeed start making a penta band phone to allow for the use of AWS/2100.

Hopefully Apple will adopt it - probably not for iPhone 5 unless they use that new Qualcomm radio chip but I don't think we will be getting an AWS phone this year, maybe the next year.

    Hopefully..

Yeah probably not for iPhone 5, since that's already in production. It would be a pretty late change to make at this point, if they hadn't implemented it already.
