Why the iPhone 5 won't have Verizon 4G

Q: Why is LTE currently immature, as Cook alluded to in his remarks yesterday.

Strauss: It's not Apple's fault, it's just that the wireless folks don't have what they need at the moment. There are no true LTE handsets on the street aside from the HTC Thunderbolt--and that's a kludge. It's big and it doesn't have a single LTE-3G chip. It has an LTE baseband (modem) chip and a second 3G chip from Qualcomm for the voice functions. They can't do voice over LTE now. Not Verizon. Not anybody.

I remember the first EVDO phone Verizon had: the Motorola E315. HUGE phone for a flip. And it came with a huge battery that barely lasted a couple of hours. And if you weren't in the (then very small) EVDO coverage are, the battery would drain even FASTER while the phone actively kept searching for 3G, with no way to turn it off.

It'll annoy some people, but in the end, it's better to make sure 4G is done right.

Left: iPhone 6+ on T-Mobile. Right: Comcast home internet connection.

Very well said. A lot of people don't realize how bad the battery life will be on a LTE device. It took Apple 3 iPhones to finally make one with decent battery life. 3 G has been around for a while. So I would rather them wait then rush a new technology out.
