Verizon & Tethering APPs (Is Verizon cracking down on this?)

There are several APPs that allow you to tether a laptop to a Verizon Android phone without purchasing a mobile hotspot plan. Is Verizon actually cracking down on people who use these apps?

It's not your dream phone. It's the one after that!©
Look here for a [VZW Coverage Map] to check your area. Select 4G before hitting [Refresh Map]

Does anyone know if VPN will work when tethered via mobile data?

Depends on the VPN server and if it requires a public IP or not. Some do, most don't. The VZW 4G phones use a private IP.

What are some of the apps that allow you to tether and which ones are recommended?

Can't you call them and have a public IP put on the account? I had to do this with my incredible to get vpn working...

Is that tether via hard wire or wifi hotspot? Which app is best for wifi tether without the tether charge?

Just to mentioned, your phone needs to be "rooted" in order to use any of the WiFi tether apps. That's not required for USB tethering.

Also, from my own experience, WiFi tethering really burns thru your battery because both your cellular radio and your WiFi radio are running just about continuously. When I use to use WiFI tethering, I would end up having to connect up the USB cable anyway just for power. So, I figured, if I have to have the USB cable connected for power, I might was well give up and use USB tethering.

I use Klink, and the author provides A+ support. The "red edition" is simply a way to get around VZW sometimes blocking the regular version from being purchased/downloaded from the Market.

The pre-installed mobile hotspot app won't work unless you have tethering as part of your plan and are paying for it. So yes, to use that you'll have to pay.
