Looks like the Icon 452 is $100, but the Zoom 4597 is $50.
Would these work just as well (simply: plug and play) as a low-end smartphone? I don't need any phone features; just internet connection.

Looking to use a device (modem or phone) to connect to an OSX laptop in T-Mo 3G area. Does an unlocked modem, such as the Option 452 (~$50 new), work out of the box, i.e. plug and play with Mac? Seems the least expensive option, as I only need data and have another phone/carrier for voice/text.
Thoughts??

I don't know anything about that particular device, but the Amazon reviews suggest it works with T-Mobile, and so possibly (even probably) works correctly using the $30/5GB plan (there have been reports that USB devices work when directly connected to a computer, but when used through a router in some manner, T-Mobile manages to block access going through it).
My solution was to wait for T-Mobile to put the Comet (low-end Android phone) on sale for $50 and get that- it can be used for USB tethering or as a mobile wi-fi hotspot.
How simple is the tethering with the Comet? Does it work straightaway or do/did you have to fiddle with it every time?
