I've been a simple mobile customer for over 1.5 years now with the $60 untld plan. This month I got a message that my data service might be suspended as it violates TOS, call some number for more details. Called the number, it was generic auto recorded message that you are overusing and stuff. It also said, if you think we can't meet your needs we will be happy to port your number to some other operator, I mean how rude
I found out I have used more than 2GB this month. As a result they have throttled my speeds to EDGE (it still shows 4g though, but speeds are ~120kbps). I normally don't go over 2gb but I remember on some months I have been marginally more than 2gb but never received such message or being throttled. I guess they have started doing it now...
Its really disappointing. I can get $60/2GB month plan directly from TMO. They have better customer service, do short number SMS, Wi-Fi calling, I can get my locked tmo set unlock for free or go the straight talk way for unltd [email protected]$45/month. I think i'm going to make a switch soon...

Proud to be Latin/Chinese xD
Yes they throttled you to 120 Kbps after 2GB and then you get the warning text at the 2.5GB mark, what's the big problem I don't understand? You got Unlimited Talk+Text+ 2GB of 4G Data and 1GB of 120 Kbps Data and when you go over only the data shuts down til the start of the next month all for $57 per month (if ordering pin from CallingMart.com with coupon offered every month). It's a fantastic deal and if you want to compare it to T-Mobile then here it is:
T-Mobile "Monthly 4G" have the worst customer service out there, at least Simple Mobile are Americans but the Americans have no patience when dumb customers call in asking for support on their phone, etc since this is BYOD! I called in to T-Mobile about my data going off when I switched off from WiFi/3G and had some technician troubleshoot my phone, guess what they did? They turned down my service in "error" instead of actually fixing the problem - I had to later call back and no one was able to figure out what happened til someone turned back my regular calls which were accidentally turned off. Moral of the Story: Filipino Customer Care is crap even if a big corporation such as T-Mobile hire them.
While you can't do a short # sms to Simple Mobile but you can text your brains out to international #'s which T-Mobile doesn't offer and on top of that you get $5 worth of international calling. If you really need short # sms there are plenty of app's that can handle it - Txt Free, Google Voice, etc.
UMA aka WiFi Calling is JUNK! It is exceptionally poor and doesn't switch between WiFi and 3G and shouldn't be any point to bring up why T-Mobile is an advantage, no carrier has WiFi calling because it's a dismal feature as is! You want calling over 3G/WiFi then download TALKATONE, it beats T-Mobile's WiFi Calling anyday! At least you can place calls while in the street without WiFi on it and the call quality isn't as terrible as T-Mobile's WiFi Calling. I can comment on both as I've run a lot of tests and I can assure you that switching to T-Mobile because of WiFi calling is something you're excited about at first but then stop using after a few calls.
T-Mobile will give you the 2GB for $60 but instead of a nice 120 kbps cruise control for the next gig then a nice friendly message that you're being shut down - you will be hit with GPRS !!!! T-Mobile providing GPRS after the 2GB is a big slap in the face as it's unusable in all ways... so what would you rather have? 2GB then unusable speeds or 2GB then 1GB of 120 kbps? 3GB total of usable speeds makes much more sense.
If you're thinking about getting Straight Talk then just know it isn't unlimited but for the price it's being offered - you cannot beat it! Read the threads here about Straight Talk and you'll get acquainted with how they operate. I have Straight Talk and I'm happy but each person has their own needs and what works for one might not work for another. Good Luck!
Actually when I made the post I was rather pissed at simple mobile, since they don't mention about the 2GB thing on their website or anywhere, I think they should as tmo does or other operator does...BTW tmo also doesn't cut your data off at 2GB, they reduce their speed and I don't think there is any upper limit for 2g data usage, though I dont have any idea of how speeds really are on 2g...but simple mobile speeds aren't great at all...
Also I don't know about you, but simple mobile support is terrible or terribly understaffed....you have to hold for more than half hour on a average before its connected to a person and if for some reason that call hangs up (deliberately or indeliberately) that means another half hour-45 mins..It has happened to me multiple times and on most times I give up...
About WiFi calling, its just for backup bro..like in parents house there is very poor tmo reception in the house...having something is better than no network or no/dropped calls when I visit them...
But yes you are right about the additional features which simple mobile gives like international SMSing or free $5 credit but then again your argument you can send free worldwide SMS via apps and international calling card are really cheap, for example the $5 credit works out ~ 2.5$ credit when you use cheaper calling card operators (atleast that's case for india when using indiald) or use skype for free smartphone to smartphone call..
Anyway I made this thread as I was unaware of the throttle, after making it I found it was fairly common...but I still think they should mention it clearly like big operators and not be hit by a surprise like this when you actually pass it...
Yeah SM has always throttled. And big time abusers are cut off completely.
The only carrier that still has actual unlimited plans is Sprint.
The only month I went over 2GBs, the websites I visited the most would not work until my next billing cycle. Youtube, ESPN, and a couple other sites I went to less still worked. But my bank's website, email services, and a couple other websites would not load.
I really don't understand to much about the way this system work, but here it goes simple mobile locked my phone, didn't tell me why but instead blamed it on my garminfone and said i needed to contact the garmin company..so disappointed with them..I've been a customer since May 2011. I really don't know what to do to get my phone unlocked and upset if I have to pay money to do so..can someone please explain what happened..i'm clueless.
If you can get MetroPCS where you live, you can save money ($50 for 2.5GB high speed, then unlimited throttled), or for the same $60 your paying, you can get unlimited. They use Tmobile's towers (which I think Simple Mobile also uses)
