Goodbye NEXTEL...... Where do we go from here?!?

Well as a company we have been with Nextel from the summer of 1997 until now. I feel like I am going through a divorce.

I have 12 iden phones 5 of them are R765is FM units that are still used on a day to day basis. We started out with i750+ then went through all the INTRINSICALLY SAFE radios as we do work in hydro carbon production facilities... I still have a few R750is FM and a i325is.

I was told friday by our sprint rep that they have no upgrade path for Intrinsically Safe handsets only rugged phones. I have one of the CDMA dura handsets to play with for the weekend and I don't like it! Call setup time is not the same as IDEN and I must go outside my house to get a signal good enough to talk. This is not going to work for us. I like the speed of the CDMA as I carry a HTC Evo also for the data and email But network coverage sucks.

I talked to Sonim Tech friday afternoon they have a target of Jan 2013 for turning out a Intrinsically Safe FM Approved CDMA handset with a target cost of about $900 each. The only network I will be able to put this on is a prepaid MVNO of VZW called PagePlus as they will take BYOD ESNs. As of right now I dont mind going to VZW as they have a 850Mhz network the rural locations we work in this is not a option it is a MUST.

Has any one used the Sonim handset yet. How is the signal and how is the support when something goes wrong with the handset. I have read some bad reviews on them when it comes to working on a handset that is supposed to be under warranty.

Is any one else having troubles finding a new carrier?

    Sam

SouthernLINC is a horrible company with horrible Customer service rep's. And they are about to lose national coverage when NEXTEL goes down.

Maybe they will come up with hybrid IDEN/CDMA handsets, so that you at least have voice service outside SouthernLinc's territory.

SoLink does not provide service in Louisiana! I would use the service if they did, Customer Service does not matter to me I don't call them for squat its simple they send me a bill and I pay it. if my handset goes down I put the sim in a new one!

I put 3 Sanyo SCP-7050 handsets onto pageplus monday afternoon. the guys are have been evaluating signal. They seam to work just about all the same places as our nextel handsets. I am going to hit ebay and pick up a bulk of the phones like this and start moving the numbers over to them. The bad thing is gone are the days of swapping sim cards in handsets and AT&T is not a option they can say what they want to about how good their network is I talk with people all day long that have poor service from them here.

Its time to do something now as the nextel network goes up and down all day long, If we have no communication with the people in the field things start to run amuck. I am toying with the idea of getting pagers. If I turn the voice mail off on the phones and set the phones to roll over to the pager if no one picks up, when we enter the plants we just leave the phones in the truck. This is the way we did it before we got Intrinsically Safe handsets.

When my dad and uncle started up in the 80's all the techs had motorola LMR radios. I called around to see if any one still offers this service and got laughed at for the most part. One radio shop said they have a few customers that have a radio license and still use them for dispatching but for 12 units it would not be cost beneficial as we would need to lease tower space to mount the repeaters.

I guess only time will tell what we end up with, I hope sonim stays on track with the IS handsets.

I found two companies providing wide area radio service in Louisiana. I'm sure there are others. It's unlikely that no one is offering LTR or Mototrbo service in your area on a lease basis.

These are wide area trunked rado networks that you lease airtime from. Yes it is more expensive than what you are paying for Nextel, but it is the same concept.

Nice, but both services are based in big cities and will not cover the locations we need. We are smack in the middle of houma and morgan city. both services stop portable coverage about 15-20 miles from our shop.. But this is exactly the type of system we were using 20 years ago. I did not call in to the the big cities looking for radio providers, but I am going to put it on my list for next week... None of the Local shops offer it any more!

Our local power company has its own setup along with some of the plumbing companies, We may contact one of these other companies and see if they would sell us some air time as we cover the same markets. We do HVAC/R and Industrial Controls therefor we are not competing ageist them.

I have no idea where you are in Louisiana but I found those two companies in a 30 second search. Again, it it's unlikely that no one is offering LTR or Mototrbo service in your area. If you want to tell me what town you need coverage in I could probably find out who is in your area.

Nextel was a thriving culture within a company and Sprint SINGLE HANDILY DESTROYED IT.

Here's what I want to see.....I want to see how the feature is tagged/labeled in the actual billing system, in the old MyNextel backend under "Included Services" or "Additional Services".

Here's how to get to that.....just trust me.

    1. Login to My Sprint.

    2. Under the "Your bill" section, click "See my bill".

    3. Once that page has FULLY LOADED, copy and paste and navigate to this EXACT URL: https://myaccountportal.sprint.com/s...subscriberList

    4. That will pull up an older MyNextel page titled "View Basic Account Information".

    5. Select any phone number on that page that you know has the Unlimited Bonus Minutes feature and it will pull up the "Unit Information".

    6. Snapshot a picture of the "Included Services" and "Additional Services" sections and post here.

As a side note for anyone wondering, I ALWAYS use these backend MyNextel systems that are still active and tied into Emsemble as they do NOT have a delay WHATSOEVER with posting information about ANYTHING being done with the account, as the "My Sprint" front end pages do. I just happen to remember all of these URL's verbatim so I can still easily navigate to what I need and get the information INSTANTLY, versus waitng "15 minutes" for "my account to update in My Sprint". GOD I MISS THE DAYS OF NEXTEL AND THE ATTITUDE OF GETTING **** DONE.

MOD EDIT: I guess I'll leave this response to a 2 1/2 year stale thread alone, just on the outside chance that the information is useful to someone who may be viewing this forum from an alternate universe or suttin'...

BTW, you may need to tone the signature down a bit so it is not so in your face spammy

I am looking to take over a former *Centennial Wireless* Account that was converted to *VERIZON*. Preferably one with a data card, but I won't discriminate if it's a voice plan with a dumbphone/smartphone/whatever. If it's a former Centennial Account and is now a VERIZON account, but still has the Centennial Plan on it, then I AM INTERESTED!
