What are warranties for again?
So...It's still not a big deal.
I remember when the iPhone first came out (2G version). I went to an Apple store in the US to pick one up. The only way to get it to work with my provider was to jailbreak and unlock it, since it wasn't available in Canada at the time. I remember Apple pushed an update and I updated the phone my accident. Long story short...my phone bricked. I took it back to the Apple store and got a brand new one within a minute. No questions asked. So IMO using a third party cable shouldn't be an issue.
When apple refuses to replace your phone due to user error, (voiding your warranty).
That 9 dollars will end up costing you $649-$849 (iphone 5 sans contract).
So this might not be a big deal to you but it is to other people.
Did your phone show any signs of physical damage?
Care to try again with a singed lightning port.
With the launch of the first iPhone in '07, the apple store was much more liberal with their replacement policies.
Technically it's not fraud when the user doesn't cause the problem on purpose. My original iPhone (2G) didn't have any sign of physical issues. But I do remember my friend's iPhone 4 fried because of a power surge and had physical burn mark and Apple store replaced it for her.

Thanks for weighing in :-)
I just wish there was a lightning car charger. I want a curly cable for the car so it's out of the way when I'm not using it. A cheap charger for my night stand would be nice too.
