Sony just announced the Xperia Z. It sports a 5" 1920x1080 display, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB RAM, NFC and 13 megapixel camera. It's only 7.9mm thick

The camera has a Exmor RS sensor which supports HDR video (high dynamic range). Sony says it allows for clear images against a strong backlight. I wonder if it also helps in low light?

Also interesting is the fact that it's water and dust resistant (IP55 & IP57). IP55 means that it's able to be submerged in up to 1M of water for up to 30 mins. Does this mean I can use it while I'm taking a bath or shower?

Sony didn't reveal the size of the battery but it does have 'Battery STAMINA' mode which shuts down certain apps when the screen is off and turns them back on when you turn the screen back on.

Sweet phone. Anyone gonna get one or are you going to wait to see what other OEM's 5" 1080P devices are like?

I'm torn between this and the upcoming S4. Got a couple months to decide.

Z for me if it will have AWS, i haven't had a Sony phone ever. Never much liked their designs.
But this might be the one to change all that.

Wow that is awesome! Phone looks beautiful too.. The water function is great.. no more water damage anymore. For example if I'm playing sports and it starts to rain near my gear I don't need to be worried anymore. Also can answer the phone in the shower! haha

Are there any other phones out or coming out that have water proof functionality besides this one? I think this tech alone would interest me to switch to Android... Always have gotten a little bit of water damage over the years of using the same phone.

    Huawei Ascend D2

Here is a link that Howard posted in the forums about this device: http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...ater-resistant

It's not out yet and it probably won't come to the U.S., but it will be available via importers at some point.

I was at the show, and I've held both the Z and ZL...

    You want the ZL.

It's much, much easier to wield than the Z, as there isn't as much excess space around the top or bottom. It's one of the first 5-inch phones that feels it's actually designed to support most functions in one hand. The design isn't as sleek-looking, but the lack of glass on the back also means you don't have to be paranoid about cracking or scratching the body.

The real question is which models Canada gets. I'm sure we'll get at least one, but I'll be somewhat disappointed if it's the Z.

If you're willing to go through the trouble of unlocking and importing phones from Japan, and potentially not being able to update them (they sometimes require the phone to be connected to a Japanese carrier in order to download the OTA updates), then you can get plenty of waterproof Android phones --- even the Japanese LG Optimus G is waterproof. Most Fujitsu, Sharp and NEC models are, also.

Yeah Japan started the water resistant phone thing, and it was their demands that resulted in other manufacturers like Huawei to make waterproof phones too. Its used here because of the tradition of taking 30minute baths almost every night; they like to surf the net/watch TV while they are relaxing in the bath

It is brilliant because like one poster said - worrying about water damage while talking in the rain, while the phone is sitting with your towel at the pool, or even just an accidental splashing sucks.
