Iden shutdown update

Well in San Diego using boost on the last day. Its official they have shut down the cross border PPT from Tijuana to any iden or qchat. I was able to make phone calls but got the service restricted when trying to use radio. Once crossed over to the us ptt was restored. Waiting for the plug to be pulled on the us side.

We were completely dark here on the East Coast by like 12:30a.

So it has begun, IDEN is shutting down.
While it is not the same, there are PTT apps for smartphones that can be used.

Left my phone on at the hotel. Just got in and got the no service. So it's official on the west coast. The nationwide iden network is done.

It's a shame that this technology stayed in the dark ages. Had great voice quality, phones were rugged... unfortunately whatever OS it had never evolved into anything anyone would want to use for anything but voice.

I'm excited that iDen is finally dead and can't wait for Sprint to finally start hauling *** with nationwide CDMA and LTE 800 deployment!

OTOH I feel kinda bad for people stuck using subpar PTT services.

The one item that PTT offered was its unlimited voice in the 5-6 countries you were able to roam on. No provider out there offers that now period. Sprint dropped the ball in not offering some sort of solution to PTT outside of CDMA coverage. If Southern linc can offer it with it dual GSM/IDEN unit, Sprint could have also.

I am guessing this is a foolish question, but now that Nextel is gone, is Southernlinc freed of its regional restrictions, i.e. if the GSM-based PTT roaming they have arranged works as well or better than Sprint's questionable CDMA PTT, can a person that is not in native Southernlinc territory sign up with them?

Again, I realize that might be more hopeful than practical, but given how frustrated we are with Sprint's CDMA PTT, it's a question worth asking. Any feedback appreciated.

There is nothing stopping a Motorola Solutions affiliated system integrator from offering this platform today. They just aren't typically consumer or small business oriented.

You could but you would be stuck with T-Mobile's native coverage...

Their PTT works just as well as iDEN and has no problems like Sprints DC solution..

That's unlikely. The arrangement is (I believe) a preferred-roaming agreement, which only establishes that native southerlinc users have the privilege of using T Mobile's network when they travel outside the native region, for a set price that Southerlinc pays them.

For them to sign up people outside of their home area, SoutherLinc would have to become an MVNO, basically reselling wireless service.

Telus, the iDen operator in Canada will be announcing their replacement for the MiKE service in September. MiKE is set to last at least until 2016 and the new PTT service will run on their LTE/HSPA network.

So long as the coverage is there, both LTE and HSPA should work quite nicely for PTT. (Sprint's trouble right now with PTT over EVDO is their very slow EVDO network, and coverage that doesn't match the iden coverage.)

Another slap in the face is that they have dropped the cross border PPT to canada. Since they couldnt sign a spectrum repos agreement like they did in mexico. The next question how is sprint going to handle the southeast since they only half of the available spectrum due to solinc running iden in georgia and alabama. Another spectrum crunch in in puerto rico where they have 1900 pcs but the 800 esmr is being ran by another provider proxtel.

Looks like the nation wide network is a hodge podge of exceptions. Border to canada and mexico cant run 800 mhz due to interference. In the south east so linc still running iden so their spectrum is cut in half. In the carribean another issue. All this with the new network vision. For a company wanting to improve the experience on their network it sure seems it wont be consistent.
