Nokia 520 on prepaid for teenager son

    Hi,
After lots of researching I think I will get a phone for my 14 years old son to use so that I can stay in touch with him.
    Nokia 520 $129. Pre-Paid 100$ for 1 year + add-on messaging 250 for 5$/ month. so basically I get $8.33/month at .15$ minute = 50 minutes + 250 messages/month.
What do you think about the phone and the plans.
He will be using it in transit only. He will use Wi-Fi at school hot spots and home most of the time.

I use the same plan for my phone. It will all come down to how many texts he will send. Keep in mind that messaging 250 only counts the text you send, received texts are free. If the 250 messages are not enough and you find that he will be in wi-fi range most of the time then perhaps you can look at a wi-fi texting app like Whatsapp or Textfree. I believe they have Whatsapp for the Win8 os.

I have never used a Windows 8 os phone but I have read that the phone is a solid entry level device.

Get a Koodo plan, my sister sends outbound around 4500 a month, and that's not including iMessage.

250 will bite you in the a$$, Koodo has fantastic plans that will fit him well.

Unlock phone and check out rates at Speak Out Wireless and Petro Canada mobile. Both Roam on Rogers .
Consider also City Fidos or Chtr depending on your locale.

prepay $100 per year is a bad idea with kids... they'll guzzle it up in a month cuz there's no cap on it :P
Managed to get Mobilicity to act and improve on 4 items.

250 messages a month is, as mentioned up-thread, nothing to a 14-year-old. My son last month sent/received 1970 messages. Two months ago, 1283.

I have him on a $20/month plan from Koodo. It's basically 50 minutes of phone time (which he barely uses), zero data (which I have had deactivated to ensure no billing surprises), and unlimited messaging (which is the key method of communication for kids today). He's using a Nokia 710 phone I picked up on Craigslist (Windows Phone 7.8... great OS, BTW). If he needs data, he waits until he's in a wifi zone, which are ubiquitous these days.

I think that is a much better solution for teenagers, until they get a part-time job and can foot their own bill.

It seems that I'm out of touch but 3000 messages a month is 100 a day 10000 is 300 a day.
I presently have an old Flip Nokia phone (8 years old) on a prepaid of 100$ per year with Fido. It is sufficient for me.
so I guess I may start with the 2500 a month with the add on plan at 5$ Then I will see the real usage for the month.
