from the user guide i got from metro site it says this

    13.8 Resetting Your Phone
    13.8.1 Backing Up Your Data
You can use your Google account to back up your application data, Wi-Fi passwords,
and other settings to Google servers. If you change your phone, the data you have
backed up will be transferred to the new phone the first time you log in to your Google
    account.
    To back up your data:
    1. On the Settings screen, touch Privacy

I know you are a very smart person from reading your posts here but thats just flatout a smartass remark, im sure we ALL know most android phones have a button combination that will get you into recovery mode where you can do a data wipe and fully reset the phone usually used when people forget their passwords and thats what i meant by a button reset which the activa did not come with that option

It clearly says HARD RESET which can be done by going into recovery. Maybe you need to re read it and then see who looks stupid.

    1) To get past the pattern-lock screen, touch on "Emergency dial"
    2) Once you have the dialpad open, type *#*#2846578#*#*
    3) Select "Factory Reset"
    4) The phone will wipe the user data and reset

Has anyone had any luck with this actually working? I tried this on a friends and it did not unlock the phone. Must this be done from the Pattern - Unlock screen? Or can it be done from the Gmail Unlock screen? Five attempts on the Gmail Unlock screen did nothing.

Generically, "Reset button" would refer to Buttons pushed to reset the device. When frozen or locked out. Pressing the settings reset makes sense. and the dial code above works for locked out.
For frozen devices try this ~Hardware key combo button reset option~

Power off or Remove battery and reinsert (to make sure device is off)
    1. Press and hold volume-down button
    2. Then press and hold the Power-key simultaneously
    3. Release only the Volume-down key
Wait for the screen booting with an exclamation mark " ! " then release the volume down key.
    6. In the following order:
    a> press the volume up
    b> press volume key down
    c> press the power key
    d> press volume down key.
After a moment you will see a message stating loading new software and will start the hard reset process

Out of all the devices I work with this is the most complicated.

[most are volume and power, then select reset]
