    Schulenburg Texas 4G

    Stopped here today, Schulenburg Tx, pop 2750, see speedtest below, last time I was here it was EDGE, I guess this is the "token" 4G spot on I10 halfway between Houston and San Antonio, better than EDGE thoughAttachment 96986

    It could be slowed by a backhaul limitation due to the town's infrastructure.

    I'll be going back there Thurs, I'll do another test then and cycle the airplane mode on and off.

    Stopped here again, did several more speed tests, put phone in airplane mode, cycled off/on, same general results. Sometimes the upload is faster than the download, the 4G has a very strong signal compared to other places.
    Better than the normal rural unusable EDGE the nearby towns have.
    Question? How do I tell if the 4G is PCS or AWS on my TMO iPhone 5

    By looking at the download frequency, my phone says 2062 so I'm on AWS band 4. PCS will range from 400s-600s.

    Well, they upgraded something, took this today while passing through:

    Not too shabby for a town with a population of under 3k

    Did a field test today there while passing through, both download and upload frequency was blank in all the fields? TMO iPhone 5

    Sometimes you have to go in and out of the tab several times for it to work. It's very inconsistent and annoying. Sometimes I have had to completely close out of the dialer and go back in.

    By the looks of the coverage map in that area, they are blasting the signal as far as possible. Compare the footprint of those sites to ones in metro areas...huge difference.

    You are right, the one tower almost covers the whole County. TMO uses a very high tower, looks like 400-500ft high, TMO is the only cell carrier on it along with some misc radio equipment.
    By far the best TMO rural 4G set-up I've tested in terms of range and speed.

    Passed through here today driving back from College Station, figured I would post an updated speedtest, still no LTE, but decent long range 4G still;

    In my South Texas travels I've yet to see a single TMO 2G/E to LTE site upgrade yet South of Interstate 10, its remained the same for almost 2 years now. And T-mobile has somewhat decent non-roaming GSM service throughout this area.
    The ONLY tower I've seen ANY work on is the TMO site in Rockport, Texas, sporting AIR cell panels since January of this year, but still only broadcasting slow 2G/EDGE last time I was through there.

    Yes, T-Mo has quietly modernized sites along the I15 but has yet to turn them up with service higher than 2G GSM. Beats me!
    Bye!
