SGS4: Google maps runs like crap

I really hate how crappy google maps runs on my S4. What gives? Anything that can be done?

It's not like it runs super crappy but it is rather laggy and choppy compared to how I'd like it to run.

If you read the complaints in the reviews section of Google Play for Maps, you'll see that you aren't alone. People with many different high-end phones have made similar comments to yours. I too didn't appreciate how poorly version 9.x of Maps ran on my S4, and so I stick with 8.3.1.

There's also a problem with navigation not using your default text-to-speech engine (and subsequently NOT speaking street names) if you don't explicitly use US English in that engine. This problem has been around for the last few years, but it seems to be more prevalent in the most recent releases.

There are plenty of sites on the internet that have archived copies of the APKs for Google Maps, so you can pick whichever version you want to go back to.

Right on, I'll stick to older versions then.

You can try out HERE Maps instead. You can download entire country maps to your phone, and then use the offline navigation. But, of course, one of the main things to test out would be the smoothness of HERE Maps on your phone.

Something to consider, unless you are deeply integrated into Google services.

I've since flashed a Nexus like ROM onto my SGS4, maps seems to run a lot better on it.
