When did iPhone unlocks get so cheap?

I remember when you had to choose between paying $50 to the carrier (and waiting until end of term or 90 days with the wireless code now) or pay close to $100 to use a 3rd party with access to the carrier systems. I just had mine unlocked for $11. I thought they had to submit payment to the carrier to balance the books and therefore it would always be more expensive using a 3rd party. What happened?

That person likely has an insider doing it.

I expect that has always been the case, because of how the iPhone unlocks work. I'm wondering what changed that now allows them to be so cheap all of a sudden. Maybe the insiders are suddenly charging a fraction of what they used to?

Is it possible for these $11 unlocks to be locked again by Apple somehow if the insider gets in trouble, exposed, etc? Don't get me wrong, I would definitely go for this...but obviously would hope that once they are unlocked that it stays that way.

it's possible but I think very unlikely. The carriers would have to audit their systems and find a way to figure out which unlocks were processed properly and not. Also Rogers staff have recommended using 3rd party unlockers in the past, at least to me. They'd have a bit of a challenge trying to justify reversing unlocks performed at their recommendation.

Although it's possible, I wouldn't expect it to be the case unless there were a significant proportion of unauthourized unlocks going on.

Thanks for the tip Ceredon! $11 later my phone isn't locked to Fido anymore! Awesome deal!

$11? You paid too much. I paid $4 last month on eBay to unlock my daughters iPhone 5S.

$11 is still better then $50 to Fido. And many of us just saw this $11 post when it came out within the last few days. This $4 eBay deal that you got wasn't mentioned anywhere on the Rogers/Fido forums that I know of...that's why Ceredon created this topic with the excellent price.

So, are you going to share with the rest of us where you got this deal?

$4.00 is still too much, since you're in LA.

It use to be "$2.00" back in 2012 when every AT&T call center CSR were abusing the Apple unlocking portal on their system.
