Are "Sony Ericsson" and Sony phones identical or different?

I have been looking for an IP67/68 rugged android smarphone in a smaller form-factor, like the iPhone4 in size, and found a couple which are identified as "Sony" Xperia ST17i and "SonyEricsson". ST17a

I am not familiar with the relationship of these two companies, since I don't follow the industry. Are these phones identical on the inside or slightly different? Would there be pros/cons of choosing the one over the other? I'm in the US, if that's important.
