Buying phone for sister who lives in Ireland

I want to buy an unlocked phone in Canada, to give as a Christmas gift to my sister. I live in Canada, she lives in Dublin using pay-as-you-go Vodafone. Right now with the CDN dollar it would be cheaper for me to buy it here.
What do I need to know with regards to making sure the phone will work on her network?

    Thanks

By a recent iPhone release, sim free version. Or if buying second hand, you just need to make sure that it has been unlocked from the carrier it was associated with. For the iPhone 6, the Sprint version is most compatible, for the 6s it is AT&T. But you probably would be fine with any variant of either.
The recent Nexus models are also very globally compatible, either the US but even better would be the Global version. Maybe for those and certainly for LG and Samsung there would be Europe specific variants.
Best would be to decide on a model that you like and then start doing some googling with Europe or even Ireland in the search string and look for specific model numbers.
You could save a lot of money, but it would be ethically questionable to purchase a phone being sold much cheaper on eBay because it has a bad esn and therefore cannot be used in North America.
Finally, you could enlist a family member over there to help you simply order one that was designed specifically for her market maybe even from her provider and you simply pay the bill.

What a generous brother or sister you are!

You need to look up Vodafone in Ireland. IIRC
    GSM (2G) = 900, 1800
    UMTS (3G) = 850/2100
    LTE (4G) = B3, B8, B20
prepaid Vodafone might be only a part of this. Google for "Vodafone UMTS" etc.

A high-end phone will likely cover all of this.
