Post What Howard Probably Won't Be Seeing from Motorola Today

Anyone remember that mystery mini-flagship I wrote about back at the beginning of August? Well, this is it.

Yesterday XDA published these photos of the forthcoming Moto M (XT1662) from the Chinese certification site TENAA. This 4.6-inch powerhouse will rock a Snapdragon 820 processor, Full HD display and at least 3GB of RAM. There might also be a 5.5-inch version with a 3,000mAh battery.

So is this why Motorola has summoned Howard to downtown Toronto later today? I'm guessing no.

Remember, both Howard and I live in the mobile backwater of Canada, where the Moto Z hasn't even launched yet. That's my bet for what today's event is going to be about. And while I'm grateful to be invited along, there will be much smiling and nodding from yours truly while he pretends that the American tech press hasn't already covered this thing to death.

Here's one of the better reviews by Michael Fisher, aka Mr. Mobile:

If I'm wrong about what's going down today, I'll be sure to let you know.

They abandoned Canada years ago when they were still an American company. Why should I care about Motorola ?

Just curious, but why should Canadian tech be any different that US tech?

We're a much smaller market. In Wikipedia's ranking of countries by number of mobile phones in use we clock in at #37, behind Nepal. So some companies, like Moto, bring their wares here much later than the USA, if at all. We've never had Moto Maker available in Canada, for example.

As for "abandoning Canada" altogether, I'm not sure I understand that comment. Can you elaborate?

I know Canada is smaller (population-wise, of course): my question is why it's different, why the same goods sold in the US wouldn't be sold in Canada? (Or why people couldn't just go across the border to buy the latest smartphone?) I mean, it's not even like Europe, where you have different plugs and a 220 volt grid to deal with.

So what does that have to do with selling products? Especially electronic stuff that's mostly made in China, anyway :-) Why doesn't e.g. WalMart Canada just order a bunch of the same phones that are being delivered to US WalMarts?

Those phones have radios which would have to be approved for use by Canada's own regulatory body. And since Canada has two official languages the packaging on those phones would have to include French.
