Internet Movie Database (imdb.com) shutting down message boards

I was browsing imdb.com tonight and came across an announcement that states they are shutting down their message boards on February 19th. That's really too bad, because buried within all the crap from trolls is actually a lot of really useful information. I like going on there to find out about shows that film in my hometown for example. I can only assume that certain users that don't have very good etiquette (to put it mildly) have now ruined it for the rest of us. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed with this decision.

Do any of you frequent imdb.com? Thoughts?

As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb's message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb's message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.
Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb's social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb's editors and one another. IMDb's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/imdb) and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive), Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).
Because IMDb's message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content they'd like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.
IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways while leveraging emerging technologies and opportunities.

I go to IMDB.com several times a day. But I just browse the surface: TV on tonight, new movies, instead of Googling movies or actors I go straight to IMDB. Will the surface stuff carry on?

It looks like everything except the message boards will remain in tact.

I'm really going to miss the message boards there.
I go there to get real information about different movies and television series.
I can always skip the trolls easily enough.

And over the years at IMDB I have met 2 of my best friends.
If not for the message boards there 1 of my friends would not have met her husband because they met in one of the boards devoted to a particular genre of movies.

I wonder what the real reason is that they are closing up the message boards.

I've always thought that the message boards were one of the most popular features on the site.

I'll go there to look up something but always check the boards to see some opinions.

I don't know where else one can get the type of information and opinion on different entertainment that has been found on IMDB.

Thank you Denny for bringing this topic up.

I had visited IMDB yesterday and saw the notification.

    A sad thing.

Oh man this is so not cool, there's really no equivalent to the IMDb boards. The most centralized place for movies taking away its discussion boards is just unfathomable. I mean to be honest their forum layout was pretty horrible but still. Usually after I watch a movie I head over to those boards to read other users interpretations of a movie and to read the trivia. This has been my ritual for at least 15 years. If you're interested you may sign the petition to keep the IMDB boards open for what it's worth: https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/...eboards-going/ Personally I believe the reason IMDb is getting rid of the message boards is simple: they can't be monetised. If IMDb could make money out of the boards, they'd be staying, but there's no cash in it for them, so they're getting axed. The sell-outs who run IMDb will have looked at the 'metrics' (a risible corporate buzzword the Data Team loves so much) and decided that traffic is not high enough for them to make any real money.

Yeah, layout was horrible, but there was always great content to be found (and lots of it). I honestly believe this is going to backfire; they're going to lose a lot of traffic.

Thanks for the link to the petition.
