A bad design then, and a bad design now. The standard touch tone array, with right angles, was already decades old when Nokia first came out with the mangled, non-standard variant..
go left from the 2 and find a 1 OR a 4, and go right from the 2 and find a 3 OR a 6, instead of nice easy to use array with everything lining up. This isn't rocket science, and the only way they could get this wrong is if the design department had a "hope it looks good, never mind anyone using it" mentality.
There WERE many Nokia models with a usable standard touch-tone array. The name deserves to the way of the Palm Pilot.
