I know this is probably old hat to most, but today I went for a drive taking my IPad Air 2 with me - took a screen shot
of the map area I was driving in. To my surprise, the location blue dot was following my route. As noted above
my iPad does not have a SIM card , thus no cellular data capability. I assume the maps use GPS - correct ?
Now that I think about it, my iPhone did the same thing on maps in New Mexico last fall, even in the absence of a cell
signal.
Please educate me on how this works. Thanks.
More reading by myself after posting this - Duuuh...... common knowledge. I discovered that since IOS update 8.3 , the GPS radio stays on in
airplane mode allowing use of maps w/o using data - or by keeping tracking off. Hikers can use this to preserve battery life.
So, answered my own oh so simple question.
