Los Angeles 2017 Truphone Thread 2017

Hello. It is now 2017 and I think I will start a Truphone thread for this year.

Truphone is an international SIM card that works on unlocked GSM phones.
It currently uses the AT&T network only in the USA.
The rates for US calls per minute, SMS and data is nine cents [minute called, SMS sent, data per MB].
Incoming calls and SMS are free.
It costs $29.99 postage included and comes with $15 credit.
Minimum amount to add additional credit is $15.
It comes with a US phone number.

Here is a good entry page:
    www.truphone.com/us/consumer/sim/

As always with a SIM card that can be used outside the USA you need to check the rates of the
places you are actually going. I just noticed good rates to the USA calling from Mexico and Canada.
You need to do your own research.

Expiration is a little foggy. I know of no one who has had a phone expire with a credit balance.
Tradition says use it every 90 days, but as I said above, nobody seems to have had a SIM expire.

I did a thread like this last year and it seemed to be nice to get most of the Truphone
    messages in one central thread.

    Questions will get answers.

I've had my truphone sims for over a year without use and they remain active. Nice of them not to enforce this.

    Same with me.
I think I've had mine for over 2 years and only once had some accidental data leakage of 1˘ over a year ago when I moved my SIM card to a different phone that I had not turned off the data and it used 1˘ before I checked the balance a few minutes after changing phones.

Has anything changed about TruPhone from year to year? They seem to be chugging along with little if anything different than before.

I think that the only thing that has changed is that they only run on AT&T now when a few years before they used to run on T-Mobile and I think they used to run on both.

Is Truphone limited to AT&T native service in the US?

If you have a US number you can originate the call outside the US?

If I am in Germany and call Spain that would be considered a call from Germany to Spain? No special codes to dial out?

On the U.S. coverage issue, they have implied they have the same coverage as GoPhone (whatever that is - I do not know). (cached link because live one not working).

There is a rate checker on the bottom of
https://www.truphone.com/us/consumer/sim/ that appears to imply that calls to Spain from Germany are the same 9 cents a minute.

Also: "Roam free. Travel the world using your mobile as if you’d never left home. No slow data speeds. No surprise roaming costs to face later. Just freedom to live in the now."

All calls should show your U.S number because they have setup their international network based on that (although there may also be extra-cost options to have a local number show as I recall if you want that).

A few months ago, I left AT&T and their high rates for international roaming, but I have yet to find a good replacement.

I mostly need data; I make very few calls and send very few text messages. I've found that international data rates are either very high or there is no coverage at all in the countries I visit.

Nine cents per MB sounds good, but it seems that is only in countries for which there are already many similarly cheap options, such as a global FreedomPop SIM (which gives free data in many European countries) or GigSky, which offers data plans in many (but not all) countries I travel to.

I checked rates for a few countries I have visited recently (such as Oman, UAE, Indonesia, and Malaysia) and see rates as high as $9 (yes, US dollars) per MB, so my search continues.

It's .40, not .04, which is the same rate that it's always been.

Have they added any TruPhone countries (that are part of the 9 cents rate)?

Ow! You are right. I am going to blame my very bad misreading on old age.
I have edited the post to remove the offending line.

For a consolation prize, I offer you free incoming calls in Canada on Toggle Mobile. This is a new addition (which was unfortunately coupled with a Mexico rate jack, as well as rate changes in other countries).

How much is Canada outgoing with Toggle? Which other non-Toggle countries have free incoming?

Any other changes with them, other than those mentioned?
