    Help Me Understand GoPhone Throttling

    Here is my current setup:

Japan iPhone 7+ on Straight Talk (ATT)
I'm in Canada often and need data there, but since ST doesn't roam, I need to pay $5/mo plus usage on a Rogers SIM card and switch out the SIM cards as I go back and forth.

I saw the new GoPhone plans that would cost $40/mo, give me 1GB of additional data over Straight Talk (6GB vs 5GB), include rollover data, and roaming in Canada and Mexico for voice/data/text.

So far everything looks good and I'm ready to switch, but I notice on the fine print, it looks like LTE speeds are limited to 3mbs, which I think can't be right, because my Straight Talk/ATT LTE tests at 75mbs down/14mbs up - which is faster than my home wifi!

I'm not a technical expert, so I want to confirm here before I change anything - but I am guessing 3mbs vs what I have now will slow apps like Instagram, Facebook, etc to a crawl and really limit the usability of data. If someone can confirm the data is throttled permanently to 3mbs, and that speed is generally unusable for data-intensive apps, it would be appreciated, and then I can forget about my plan to switch.

Maybe I misread the small print - is the $45/mo 6GB plan at normal LTE speeds, while the $60/mo "unlimited" plan capped at 3mbs? If the 6GB plan is not capped, then I can stick with my intention to switch to GoPhone.

You misread. The $45 plan has uncapped LTE speeds; the $60 plan is throttled.

We have the 6 gig Go Phone plan. It is NOT speed capped and you can tether all of it if you need to.

I can also confirm that the $45 plan LTE data is uncapped. Although sometimes it seems slower than when I had postpaid.

    Great, thank you everyone!

I would assume it shouldn't be slower than Straight Talk on the ATT network, or at least the same.

I came from AT&T postpaid 2 months ago and haven't noticed a change in my speeds at all. As of last month they even seem a little faster me. Here is the highest and lowest speeds on my GoPhone.

I have a post paid line for business and Gophone for my personal phone. I do not sit around and run speed tests. The user experience is the same. When post paid AT&T is slow so is Gophone. When Post Paid is fast so is Gophone.

Is it possible to add the $10/day international pass to a GoPhone account, or is that just for postpaid?

My speeds in S.E. FL with GoPhone is about the same that I've seen when I was with Verizon post-paid for many year, highest about 60-80Mbps, lowest about 3-5Mbps. I've never got your type of speeds (100+) on either carrier. Even friends I know that have T-Mobile, AT&T, and MetroPCS all are usually under 80Mbps. I'd be curious what LTE Band you were on.

There is a 2 next to the Cell band info. Would that be it?

That is just for postpaid. The plans mentioned above are for international Long Distance where one calls from the states.

That would be Band 2, there is 2/4/5/12/17 that is mostly used by AT&T, 2/4/13 is mostly what I used on Verizon.

Makes sense. I have a feeling I'm on this band most of the time with AT&T going by how fast my phone seems to work as far as data related things. With Verizon I had good speeds for my usage, however, AT&T is better on the data side here and Verizon is better on the voice side.
