A web search indicates that there may be some hacks to get it to work outside the car, including moving the SIM to a different hotspot device. It is unknown how much AT&T checks the eligibility of the device the SIM is in.

I hope I am wrong and the Spark will work as well as a Mobley. Though the TOS explicitly prohibits using the Spark plugged into anything other than a vehicle. The Mobley did not have this restriction.
The iPad plan also has restrictions. And yet we using sims in other devices.

What are the main differences between the NETGEAR Nighthawk M1 Mobile Hotspot Router (MR1100) currently at $231.71 vs the NETGEAR 4G LTE Modem (LB1120) currently at $117.95?

Haha! VERY funny! But not too helpful!

My question is regarding using one of them with the AT&T Unlimited iPad plan.

If I connect a router to them, will there be much difference in performance?

Yes, there will definitely be a difference in performance, the LB1120 is only Cat 4 and is missing commonly used LTE bands. Spend the extra money.

    Specs:

In short, band coverage and potental speeds. If you live in a typical mediocre At&t area with at best 50Mbps speeds and typical band 2 and 12 coverage, you probably won't see much difference between the two. If your area has Carrier Aggregation and the towers have great bandwidth then the Nighthawk will perform much better.

If you travel and get the nighthawk unlocked, I have used it on Verizon and TMo sims. But seeing you are looking at the LB1120, that aspect probably doesn't interest you.
