You misunderstood that post. There were two main points in that post.
1. My E4 was unlocked (using a code bought on Ebay).
2. I was quoting another member who said that one can use the Change Carrier option to trigger the screen to enter the unlock code, instead of putting in a non-Verizon SIM to trigger the screen. The Change Carrier option goes away once the phone has been unlocked.

I stand corrected. I'll go the usual route when unlocking a phone.

Either way will work. Since I wanted to use a TF/AT&T SIM with it anyway, I just put in that SIM instead of digging through the Settings.

It's important to remove the VZW sim before turning on the phone for the first time.

I don't think it really matters with a Verizon Prepaid phone. At worst, it'll try to get you to activate the phone on Verizon Prepaid, which you can just exit out. It USED TO matter with an AT&T Prepaid (GoPhone) because turning it on with the AT&T SIM in place will show that it had been used on GoPhone and AT&T wouldn't give you an unlock code. Now that AT&T no longer gives an unlock code "on request", it doesn't matter now anyway.

Don't ever bit an at&t refurb, even when codes are available, they come back as the phone is already active on an account, I hate At-t.

Got an unlock code in less than 24 hours. How long can I wait before I use the code, is there a time limit on them? I don't want to put in a tf sim as the recipient may want another carrier.

You can unlock with any SIM or no SIM.
The SIM used to unlock does't matter.
No effect in future SIM use.

You might want to use the unlock code soon, so you can request another code or a refund if it doesn't work. These code sellers come and go on Ebay.

I was recently working with a new Prepaid E4 Plus with the stock SIM removed, and it would lock you into a screen saying to insert the SIM. Could find no way out and had to reboot. With the SIM installed you could back out of the activation sequence, but it locked up the phone. Could not find a way out of that either and had to reboot. This eventually was to be activated on Verizon.

I tried taking out the verizon sim, but didn't want to keep seeing their activation screen, so put in an inactive GSM nano sim from tracfone and it went directly to the unlock screen.
