    Obtaining feature phone balance online

I did an experiment with a feature phone in my account. The phone belongs to a friend who is unable to manage it on his own.

When the phone is turned off, the green "get" button returns an error. When the phone is turned on, the balance is obtainable.

Also, he made a one minute call to me and the web balance was correct immediately afterward.

This tells me that the balance is retrieved via a special command to the phone which fetches the relevant parameter and sends it to Tracfone.

I know that Tracfone can mess with its phones this way because one of my feature phones was missing a menu item and the whole menu item was sent to the phone. This was in the days of Karen the specialist.

So if you manage someone's feature phone, make sure the phone is turned on if you need balance information from it.

I've used Tracfone's fast portal link to check my Inlaws phone minutes.

If you try it the pin wheeling will never stop with a feature phone number but you can see the remaining minutes left in the background. But no service end date

TracFone does have a way to check phone balance on their own website which seems to work better than the above link.

    www.tracfone.com/direct/CheckBalance

It does require the last four digits of the phone's serial number/IMEI or BYOP SIM but at least the service days are correct.
