Best Buy no longer charging MTS fee, $60 refill now 13% off

Credit to Mikep4 on redditt, Bestbuy is no longer charging an MTS fee or sales tax on refill cards, just sales tax on SIM cards. I just used the 20% off a refill with the purchase of a $3.99 SIM card, to purchase a $60 refill and SIM for $52.30 in CA. I won't use the SIM card, so it cost me $52.30 for a $60 refill. It's an even better deal if you're in a state with no sales tax.

This is great news. Thanks for posting. Saves me another 7% as they were taxing the refill card before. Too bad the $70 refill is not an option right now. Hopefully the sim will drop to $1 again, making even sweeter when you don't care about the sim.

12.7% off. Not as good as I was getting (free), but I still had a good bit of credit applied to this bill. $1 would've been sweeter though, or that Honor 6X deal again.

Just ordered - $60 (and SIM) for $52.34. Keep in mind that you should apply the refill immediately as Best Buy has a bad habit of not activating/scanning everything before it ships. I had two SIMs that were useless and a refill (they were able to replace the refill).

What does using it right away change?

Well you don't want to wait months and then find out BB didn't activate the darn thing right.

They may have (legal)cause to not correct by then.

I ordered online. I typically avoid that store (most) at all cost. Not saying I don't/won't buy from them, but unless I need it right then I almost always ship everything.

We'll see if I have an issue. Have you?

Online sales are the ones that people report the most problems. There may be prompts at the register that prevents the negligence in store.

I have bought several in store and never had a problem. Iirc, the receipt indicates that the refill has been properly activated.

This was my first buy online, iirc. I sometimes like to hold my refills for a while in case I decide to strategically jump carriers, and use refill months later.

I did just check it and system indicated it was good.

You have to scratch off to check.

I use the My Cricket app, just as if you were to make a payment.

When you choose refill card as method of payment and enter the code it checks for validation before asking if you are ready to actually apply the payment.

So, you must must be a Cricket customer to check. Or at least know an active Cricket phone number, I believe.

I haven't had an issue with refill cards from best buy being active, but I have only done about 12 to 15 of these since the bundle promo started. It was great when they lowered the refills by another 10% and it stacked with the bundle 20%.

The issues I have had with activation have been the sim kits - only a few of the dozen or so I got could be activated. Easy to check by going to activation page and entered sim info. Good news is you can return the sim cards later if they don't work for you and it should not affect the bundle price.

I guess they treat it like any other exchange return with the 30 day window (or whatever it is) - I just remember one I bought last September was like that and when I called, the person on the phone said I had two days to get to a store and get it exchanged.

Both times I’ve ordered sim/refill bundles, the sim wouldn’t activate, and Best Buy just refunded me for the sim over the phone. Didn’t have to go to a store or send back the sim, and I kept the discount on the refill. We’ll see what happens this time.
