AT&T last week announced two wind energy purchasing agreements and signed onto a renewable power initiative.

The telecom giant enrolled in the Corporate Renewable Energy Buyers’ Principles, an effort led by the World Wildlife Fund that includes numerous businesses with significant energy consumption.

The company also signed deals with subsidiaries of NextEra Energy Resources for 520 megawatts of power. Three hundred megawatts will come from a wind energy farm in Webb Co. and Duval Co., Texas, while the remaining 220 megawatts will be generated by a wind project in Caddo Co., Okla.

AT&T set a goal of developing technology to save 10 times the amount of carbon in its operational footprint by 2025.

“As one of the world’s largest companies, we know how we source our energy is important," AT&T Operations President Scott Mair said in a statement. “Many companies are focused on their own carbon footprint but we believe our industry can do more."

The announcement follows T-Mobile's pledge to use renewable sources to account for 100 percent of its energy use by 2021.
