New AT&T plans effect on cricket

Apparently the new unlimited choice plan at AT&T starting Thursday will be full speed with constant deprioritization instead of a constant 3Mbps throttle. I wonder if cricket will go in the same direction?

What is constant deprioritization? They won't wait until you hit 22gb to slow you down in congested areas?

Exactly. The trade off is full speed in non congested areas. It’s similar to Verizon go unlimited/ beyond unlimited.

This is how the 250/500GB Wireless Home Phone & Internet plans were sold for some rural customers. I set my dad up with that and he's in an area that will likely never see congestion and gets 30Mbps+. Using it at my apartment got about 3Mbps when an AT&T postpaid phone would see 15-20Mbps (and Cricket saw the full 8Mbps).

I wonder if 2017 was AT&T's way to experiment with a lot of different things - the rural WHPI plans, $20 unlimited Mobley, 3Mbps, video throttling, etc. and treat it as some weird A/B testing to shape future plans.

I think it is just using congestion to deprioritize.
That way they do not need to keep track of usage to determine who to slow down.
Just give them what the network can handle.

Would be great if they did something like that at the 8Mbps speed and similar price of the unlimited 2 plan.

I would be happy with 3-5 mbps with 2-3 for video.

While the 1.5 video works, there is NO room for background tasks or overhead.

I'm basing that on a lot of reports about buffering and other issues I have read here and on cordcutternews, especially with DirecTV Now.

In most of the cases, if they VPN to get a full 3 (instead if 1.5) the problems go away.

If 1.5 works for you, then great. I would prefer 2.

You should be more concerned about prices going up and service getting slower. AT&T is the one trolling its customers and you willfully accept it. Is it just plain ignorance or apathy? This would make a good psych experiment.

Philo uses ABR @ 500kbit (360p), 1Mbit (480p), and 2Mbit(720p). Its the lowest quality video product on the market. Youtube also uses adaptive streaming as low as 500kbit. Of course it will work, doesn't mean it looks good. If you want to watch proper HD video, forget about it, not happening on Cricket. Not sure I'd let a kid watch such low quality video unless you want them to need corrective vision.

They would have to get him out of his mother's basement before they could study him...

Too much work for the very limited return.
