How to know the owner of the iPhone?

    Hello everybody,
I'm in Europe and found iPhone with American SIMcard.
Is there a way to find the owner? The mobile is blocked with the 6numbers code.
    Thanks

Besides waiting for one of their contacts to call, not really.

Put the sim card in another unlocked iphone and look in the Settings, Phone for the number to appear.

If the owner is from the US and the phone was reported lost/stolen to their provider, the phone has been blacklisted with all US carriers. Technically if that was done there will no incoming or outgoing calls with the current SIM in any device.
Don't make me turn this car around.....

There will be. The phone is blacklisted, not the SIM card.
However, if it’s been deactivated or number transferred to another SIM, then nope. No inboud or outbound calls possible.

My point was if the owner reported the phone as lost/stolen the SIM is dead. The only way the SIM would work is if the owner did not report it to their provider yet. I worked as CS support long enough to know.

by inserting a perfectly working sim into a lost/stolen reported phone is a good way of killing the working sim

That’s why I write a phone number behind my iPhone. Just in case a Good Samaritan finds it.

Blacklist is linked to a device IMEI, not its SIM card. It might be different in other countries, but that’s how it works in Canada.

Or use “Lost Mode” from Find my iPhone and input your contact information to be displayed on the screen

I know the difference between a Blacklisted phone and a phone that is reported lost/stolen.

Reporting a phone as lost/stolen will have the carrier shut down the SIM card essentially deactivating it. A phone with a marked as lost/stolen SIM will not be able to reactivated on the same carrier (At&t in this example) as they will detect it was previously associated with another account. If a SIM is deactivated as lost/stolen there is nothing that can legally be done to reactivate it. It is far cheaper to kill the SIM than risk someone else using it.

This is not the same process as blacklisting a phone where phone information is added to the database and no carrier will reactivate the phone .

My comment about finding the phone number still might have value in locating the owner. The sim will ID the carrier, the area code the possible home vicinity of the owner. Calling the carrier support (611, for instance) might get a message to the phone owner.

A phone number search on Google could turn up leads about who, where, etc. is or has been associated with that number. Google your own number sometime and see what you can find. Maybe it will turn up something on social media like Facebook.

The SIM card will be branded, call the Carrier with the phone's IMEI, they can link it back to the owner's account (look up the carrier CS number online if 611 doesn't work from the locked device). They'll not likely divulge anything to you, but if you give your contact info they can pass that on to the owner, one way or another.

Thanks for making the effort, let us know if you had success. Finding a lost phone can't be that uncommon an event.

I wonder if your local Apple store would send it back to the owner if you gave it to them

They probably won't give you the owner information due to privacy concerns.
