Question PAYG Allow LTE Phones Yet?

Its getting tougher and tougher to find good condition android phones that are 3G/CDMA anymore.

Our Droid 3 is dying, and I would like to (finally!) replace it with something else out of my old phone drawer. Any way to switch to an LTE phone? I guess that would including needing a SIM (a PP SIM or a VZW SIM?).

I would think at some point PP would want to start moving PAYG customers from CDMA to LTE.

They'll have to do something before the end of Q2. I suppose one option is to drop paygo altogether. Those on existing plans will get grandfathered in until 3g is decommissioned entirely. Or maybe migrate those accounts to tracfone.

Just get a Moto E4 Plus for $150 and get on the $12 plan.

Then do auto pay to get it down to $10/month. Piece of cake.

But $10/mo is a lot more compared to $10 every 4 months (120 days)!

Agreed. I have a HSN>TracFone>PagePlus LG Ultimate 2 on the PP Standard Plan and it is a perfect match...

What happens at the end of Q2? I missed the memo.

No more 3g device activations on vzw which means no more 3g activations on vzw mvnos.

^^^Which means 3G devices are more or less grandfathered in (sound familiar, PPC users?) temporarily, and if for whatever reason yours happens to 'fall off' the network, you won't be able to get it back on. I have two by the way. Anxiously awaiting developments on the Standard Plan.

Sounds like I should start using more data in my moto G (3G) more often to burn some balance.

2G devices will be affected? (voice and text at least?).I still have my old Nokia phone with a relatively high balance in this plan as well.

If you already have a phone on the PPC Standard Plan, I doubt that anything will need to be changed until 12/31/19. That's just my prediction.

If you DON'T already have a phone on the PPC Standard Plan, and WANT one there, the recommendation is to get it on there before 06/30/18, unless PPC makes a change to allow VoLTE phones before 06/30/18.

I suspect that this in fact is what will happen, along with physical refill cards. It seems like fewer and fewer MVNOs offer paygo because it isn't a moneymaker and I imagine that the paygo customers are probably the few remaining who purchase the physical refill card from the store. I've noticed that some locations that used to sell the refill cards no longer carry them. It's a lot of investment in paper, ink, production, delivery, etc. for the MVNO and shelf space, employee time, etc. for the vendors. MVNOs would far prefer online refill and autopay is better still from their point of view.

Unfortunately the poorest people who don't have credit/debit cards or online access (such as homeless) are the ones who will lose out if in fact paygo and refill cards are eliimitated.
My smartphone is a lot smarter than I am.

Hopefully not but I guess it depends on their profit margins.

If anything they would tell people or convert them to TracFone.

Worst case there is expo mobile.
