Recommendation for unlocked 4.5" Android phone

I current have a 1st Gen Moto E that I'm using with Ting. But my phone has been trashed and need a new phone. I do not like carrying around a phone that is tablet sized. What would you guys recommend for a 4.5"-ish phone? Needs are modest, 1gb of Ram, 8gb of memory and a micro SD slot that can take a 32gb card.

    Thanks!

If you can bump up a half inch you can try an unlocked Moto E4 or G4 Play. 5 inchers are pretty decent for compact everyday carry phones. I have a ZTE V8 Pro (5.5) and Moto G5 Plus (5.2) but I keep going back to a Moto E4 because of it's smaller size. Both the E4 and G4 Play are way way nicer then that old 1st Gen E.

New, new to you or new? Budget?
As a US citizen I have the right to criticize my government. My thanks for this is endless in magnitude.

Fascism is here led by a hypersensitive psychopathic dictator having complete power, obsessively suppressing criticism, regimenting industry & commerce. Emboldening racism & aggressive nationalism.

I don't have a budget if the phone is what I need, though with my modest needs I'll be surprised if it's over $150. I'd prefer not to buy a used or refurb phone. A couple of years of warranty is worthwhile.

Thank you Zap, that's a great link. They should add "unlocked" to the list of carriers, and have minimum as well as maximum sizes, but it's a starting point.

Nothing good really available in the U.S.. Which carrier? There's the 4.7" Galaxy A3 which is really the only decent phone with a small screen other than the iPhone. LTE 1,3,5,8,28.

    https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_gal...2017)-8336.php

But in the U.S. you can only buy it from third parties with no warranty.

BTW, go by the width and height more than by the screen size. There are some phones with very narrow bezels that can have a larger screen than a physically larger phone.

You'd think that Samsung, LG, Moto, etc. could sell at least one small screen phone in the U.S. Something to compete against the iPhone 8.

As someone else said, you're probably going have to relent and move to 5.0". Then you have the choice between an Moto E 4th generation or an LG K8.

It actually does not have NFC, despite what B&H says.

Depends on how you define "good." If good include (US) LTE band support, then Noke phone has only the base LTE bands for AT&T and TMO, and no supplemental ones. It doesn't have B71, which will be TMO's mainstay band in 2 years.

LTE band support is the first spec I usually check, and Nokia, or at least phones now using Nokia brand, have the same basic support as I see in typical no-name Shenzhen phones. Other specs are likewise lackluster. I think people are still enamored of the brand, and not aware of the hardware.
Agreed, but he wants something very cheap. Hopefully he's not on T-Mobile. It's unusable in my area so very few people use it, I don't know a single person on T-Mobile in my area (Northern California).

Noke 2.1 is cheaper. Anyway, all this may well be irrelevant. IIRC Ting started out as a Sprint MVNO and only later added TMO. OP's ancient E1 likely predates this move => he is probably on Sprint => GSM phones don't work. If so, his best option is Moto E4 retail (ie unlocked.)

Either way, OP needs to get up to speed on phones. Phones are now 5" and up, unless you want to go fringe. And no phone has 2-year warranty unless you want to buy aftermarket warranty. At $150 budget, probably not.
With most credit cards you get a 2nd year of warranty included. I have used this in the past and they did not give me any trouble.

While there are no mid-range Android phones that have a small screen, you still have the Apple iPhone non-Plus models, as well as the even smaller iPhone SE.
