    Shaw Q3 2018 Results

    Shaw Q3 2018
    Mar 1 - May 31

    Press Release
    Full Report
    Earnings Call

    Wireless Q3 2018
    Revenue $237M (+54% YoY)
    ARPU 39.84 (2Q18 38.43, 3Q17 37.05)
    RGU (subs) 1,317,844 (+46,700)
    Postpaid 944,838 (+54,200)
    Prepaid 373,006 (-7,500)

Wireless revenue of $237 million improved 54% year-over-year as equipment revenue of $82 million compared to $32 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2017 and service revenue improved 27% to $155 million. Wireless operating income before restructuring costs and amortization of $62 million improved 48% year-over-year, primarily due to continued subscriber growth and higher average revenue per unit (“ARPU”), which increased by 7.5% to $39.84, partially offset by incremental costs from higher subscriber loading in the period including higher device sales compared to a year ago. The current quarter also benefited from a one-time recovery of approximately $13 million related to retroactive roaming rates.

    Walmart signs on

“We’ve recently completed our successful fifteen store operational trial with Loblaws’ ‘The Mobile Shop’ and are working closely with Loblaws’ leadership on our broader launch that will reach nearly 100 stores in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia,” said Mr. Shaw. “In addition, we’re very pleased to announce that we’ve recently signed a comprehensive distribution agreement with Walmart, which will provide for our Wireless products to be distributed in approximately 140 Walmart locations. These retail growth initiatives, both of which we expect to begin this summer, will substantially improve the accessibility of our Wireless products and help close our historical retail distribution gap. When combined with our existing corporate and dealer store network, Freedom Mobile expects to have approximately 600 retail locations operational in early 2019.” [press release]

    [call]
20 - 30 new corporate stores planned for the coming year

    It sounds positive.

They've explained why network build-out hasn't been stellar, but have promised movement soon.

They're getting more revenue, and aren't hobbled by lack of iOS anymore...

I am curious to see if they'll make network improvements fast enough to notice now that they've said something on the call.

I don't really follow the news but here are a couple of Shaw related items -

Corus announces $936-million quarterly loss, cuts dividend by almost 80%

And Shaw hires x- BC premier airhead Christy Clark to board of directors.
She is best known for quitting her job twice. If she isn't the leader she quits.
She campaigned on building liquid natural gas sites that would bring billions into the province and thousands of jobs. Neither happened so she gave herself a bonus.

    .
While Premier, she tried her best to bankrupt both BC Hydro and ICBC before she got tossed out of office. If successful she most likely would have sold them to her Business buddies resulting in a royal fleecing of the folks in BC.

If this is the character of the people that Shaw is putting in a position of power.....then good luck with being a customer.

Would I like Freedom to build Home Networks in Red Deer, Lethbridge, Banff, Lake Louise, Winnipeg, Regina and Saskatoon?
    Absolutely.

Am I counting on it happening anytime soon?
Nope, the ShawMobileHotspot WiFi mesh network will just have to do for now.

I'd settle for the corridors between the coverage areas they have now.

Hwy 2 between Edmonton and Calgary, for example.

Or the 401 from Windsor to Kingston. (Even London to Kingston)
