Deactivate texting and data on Prepaid?

    Hello,

a friend in the Yukon is looking for a cheap mobile service that allows him to call any Canadian number, and be called from anyone. My friend does not need data nor text messaging, and does not want to incur charges for receiving texts from anyone.

Is it possible to have Bell deactivate data services and/or text messaging on a prepaid account?

    TNX

You can just turn off mobile data on the phone. Receiving a text is free (iirc)

I know you can, and I can. But my friend is not that savvy.

Hence my question if Bell will turn these things off on request, to avoid any trouble.

    Will they do that?

Bell will say they will, but as with any carrier I would not trust them to do so. They make a boatload of money off of people going over their data limits. The problem also with turning off your mobile data is that you will NEVER receive another MMS message even if it's included in your plan. MMS requires mobile data.

So here you're damned if you do, damned if you don't.

All minimal carrier data plans are "pay per use" meaning you don't have a data bucket. All you need to do once is open the internet when you're not on WiFi and you're screwed.

Unless someone else chimes in with any additional information, just tell your friend how to turn off the mobile data and live with no picture messaging. If you are in control, you won't be charged through the nose.

You might be able to keep MMS working, by modifying the APN so the APN type is only set to mms (remove default). I have not tested this, but I think it may work if MMS is a must.
