Possibly off-topic, but too hilarious not to share.

Alan Cross—yup, that Alan Cross—reports that the Screen Composers Guild of Canada is proposing a blanket tax on all Internet bandwidth above 15GB/month. It wouldn't even affect the vast majority of mobile users in this country, but still... I literally have no words for the stupidity of this, so here's the source:

The SCGC is suggesting a “copyright levy” that is inspired by the blank-media levy. We envision a new “internet-light ISP service” that could form the exchange of revenue that we refer to as the SCGC Copyright Model (SCGC-CM). It would allow home internet users fifteen gigabytes of unlevied data per-month, enabling ample room for email, commerce and downloading, but beyond that, a copyright levy could be collected and re-mitted to a collective for distribution to copyright holders.
Well, I'm convinced. I mean, who better to decide how much Internet you need than some obscure old media guild that you've never heard of until right now? And what better use for an Internet tax than to pay off the super-talented folks who write all that unforgettable music for all those high quality Canadian TV shows that don't exist?

File this one under "fatally out of touch".
