Need advice on prepaid hotspot, or best option for my use

    Hey guys

I have 2 wifi thermostats that I want to keep on eye on,
and want to be able to change settings.

The location they are at would cost me about $80 a month to have
basic internet service, so I was thinking a hotspot service where I can
set up a hotspot router for viewing temps and adjusting schedules.

The thermostats don't need much data, I would like to keep it at $20
    or under.

Does red pocket have hotspot devices
Does anyone know of a hotspot device that works with them
Any other ways of communicating with my thermostats on a budget.

Thanks for any info you can provide !

Yes, RP offers data only plans. https://www.redpocket.com/broadband has a $10/mo 1GB plan.

Another option is a FreedomPop prepaid plan for $49.99 for a year of 1GB/mo. I would suggest buying it from Amazon, Best Buy, Target, or Best Buy eBay. That plan has been as low as $34 for the year when on sale and combined with a 15% off eBay coupon, but even the regular price is a pretty good value.

You can use either the RP or FP plans in an unlocked or AT&T Hotspot device.

So lets say you have a cabin where there's good cell service. You could just leave a cellphone plugged in with it's hotspot turned on at all times right????

    One more question Boz1

Does it matter if I use a data, or full plan with the hotspot unit,
lets say I buy the years worth of talk text and data, will that sim activate with a hotspot device ??

Also thanks much for all your help.

Make sure the device you are using isn't going to go to sleep. Given the low usage of the Wi-Fi Thermostats, some devices (especially phones) will disconnect the hotspot if there isn't data usage over a period of time to save battery -- they may do this even if plugged in. So make sure the hardware end will work for extended periods.

A dedicated hotspot won't use background data like a phone will -- that's another reason you may want to use a basic hot spot (rather than a phone).

I used hotspot for weeks at a time from my phone and I just leave it plugged in with no changes to default settings for sleep or anything.

The only problem is sometimes the phone needs a reboot about once a month so in that case you can lose connection until reboot.
