I used a OnePlus 2 phone, which also has not CDMA radios built in, on Fi for a year with no issues. Since 3G on Fi could be either GSM or CDMA, they prefer you to use phone that has both frequencies. But since 3G is on its last leg, many non supported phones have enough LTE radios for coverage to not be a problem domestically or internationally. I'm not sure if they will allow you to activate a number with a non supported phone or not, but if it will work fine on T-Mobile you should be good.

well, I bought a Google Fi card at Best Buy which I'll try as a travel sim. That was an adventure actually, they apparently don't keep them in stock at any BB in Silicon Valley, you have to order one or go to the fringes, like Santa Cruz, to find one on a shelf. Strange.

"I'll try as a travel sim."

Let me know how it goes, I'm also planning on doing this-- I also picked up a Google Fi SIM from BB.

I’m interested in Google FI for travel....would only use it for international travel. My phone is listed as compatible with a Google FI. Really just in the checking my options phase at this point.

Report back, I used the Google Fi SIM abroad on an unlocked iPhone Xs Max (south america) and it worked great for the most part. I could roam on most providers.. except.. Movistar for some reason. Also Tethering did not work. However, you can select Manual Cell Selection and pick a different provider instead of Movistar and then I was good to go. Overall it was a great experience for International travel and I will likely use it again in the future for exactly this purpose. Within the US on the iPhone, I did have some issues reported in a separate thread.

I used Fi in Spain with a Sony XZ2 and it worked great for the most part. More data at 4G speeds than expected. It didn't work at all in our brief time in Gibraltar, Google said they had no roaming agreements there.
